PAIGE'S POV

I walked into the room with Uncle Austin, and he closed the door gently behind us. The room was bright and had all these strange things hanging on the walls. I wasn't sure what they were for, but I knew Uncle Austin was going to use them on me, and that made my stomach feel a little funny.

"Alright, Paige," Uncle Austin said softly as he helped me up onto the examination table. "I should probably explain what I'm going to do first so you're not too surprised, okay?" He smiled at me, but I could tell he was trying to be extra gentle because he knew I might be a little nervous.

I looked around at all the shiny tools, and honestly, they looked a little scary. Some of them were big, and some of them were sharp. I felt my heart start to race, but I had to stay brave. I wasn't a scaredy-cat like my sister, Dallas. I could do this!

"You ready to get started, Paige?" Uncle Austin asked, his voice soft but steady.

I nodded, though I wasn't entirely sure about all the things he was going to do to me. I just wanted to get it over with.

"You'll be just fine, hun," he said encouragingly as he smiled and gave me a little pat on the head. "First, I'm just going to check your temperature and blood pressure. This is the easy stuff. We'll go through it quickly, and you'll be done in no time."

I nodded again, even though I didn't fully understand what blood pressure was, but I trusted Uncle Austin. He stuck a little thermometer in my ear and we waited for it to beep. I held really still, hoping it would be over soon. When it beeped, he took the thermometer out and grabbed something that looked like a big strap to put around my arm.

"This might feel like a tight bear hug around your arm," Uncle Austin explained as he put the strap around my arm and attached a little thing to his neck. "I'm just going to check how well your heart is working."

I was a little nervous, but I stayed still like he told me to.

"What's that?" I asked, looking at the thing hanging around his neck.

"This?" Uncle Austin asked with a smile. "This is my stethoscope. It's kind of like earphones, but instead of listening to music, it helps me listen to your heart and lungs."

He squeezed the little ball on the side, and the tightness around my arm got even tighter for a second before it started to loosen. I didn't really like it, but it wasn't too bad. I tried to focus on how brave I was being.

"Okay, Paige, you're doing great," Uncle Austin said as he took the stethoscope out of his ears and moved to listen to my heart and lungs.

He pressed the cold metal onto my chest, and I jumped a little at the coldness, but I tried not to make a fuss.

"Can you take some deep breaths for me, sweetheart?" he asked gently.

I nodded and took a big breath in, then let it out slowly, just like he told me. The stethoscope was still on my chest, and it felt a little strange, but I just focused on breathing in and out like a grown-up. After a moment, he took the stethoscope off and put it back around his neck.

"You're doing so well, Paige," Uncle Austin praised me. "Now, I'm going to check your ears."

He grabbed another tool from behind me and started putting it in my ear. At first, I got a little scared because it looked like he was going to poke it really deep in my ear, but he was just looking inside. He did it to my other ear too, and I didn't feel anything, so I tried to relax.

"Look up for me, Paige," he said softly as he gently nudged my head back so I was staring at the ceiling.

I let him do it without fussing, though it felt a little funny. He moved the tool over to my nose and gently looked up inside. It wasn't uncomfortable, just a little strange. I wasn't sure why he had to check my nose, but I figured he knew what he was doing.
