AMELIA'S POV
"Come on, little sis," Taylor said, her voice warm but firm. "You know I won't hurt you. It's been a while since we've had you in for a checkup anyway, and you're due. Plus, this could help show the girls that it's not something to be scared of." Her smile was reassuring, but I could feel the pressure mounting.
"Taylor, you know having me go first won't make it any easier for them," I said, my voice quiet and hesitant.
I didn't want to be the one to set an example, not when I was already dreading the whole thing. But deep down, I knew she was right. They needed to see that this wasn't so bad. Maybe, just maybe, if I could get through it, they'd be less worried. Still, the thought of sitting in that chair again made my stomach twist into knots. Taylor raised an eyebrow, clearly trying to be patient with me.
"There's not going to be anything major today, I promise. I'm just going to look and polish; no scaling, no deep cleaning, nothing like that," she said, her voice softening even more.
She was trying to make this sound easy, but I wasn't convinced. However, when she added,
"Do it for your girls, sis,"
I knew there was no getting out of it. I had to do this for them. They needed to see it wasn't something to fear.
"Fine," I sighed, giving in.
I helped Dallas into one of the chairs beside the exam chair, while Paige eagerly climbed into the other, her eyes wide with curiosity. I took my seat in the exam chair, trying to hide my nerves behind a calm face. Taylor adjusted the chair so I was leaning back slightly. I could feel the girls' eyes on me as they sat there, watching every move Taylor made. I wasn't sure if that made it better or worse, but I did my best to stay calm. Taylor clicked on the overhead light, the soft buzz of the room filling the space as she put on her gloves and mask.
"So, girls," Taylor began, her voice light and cheerful, "these are my tools. Unlike Uncle Austin's, these are a lot smaller and only for your teeth." She held up two instruments, a small mirror and an explorer. "This is my mirror," she said, pointing to the shiny object in her hand, "and this is my explorer. The mirror helps me see all of your teeth easily, and the explorer hunts for sugar bugs, cavities, that sort of thing."
Dallas's eyes widened, and she shifted nervously in her seat.
"That looks sharp," she said in a small voice, her eyes fixed on the explorer.
Taylor nodded, her expression kind but firm.
"It is a little sharp, but don't worry. Your teeth are really hard, so you won't even feel it," she explained softly. "And guess what? Your mom is going to be so nice and let you see exactly what I'm going to do to her before it's your turn. That way, you'll know exactly what to expect."
I could tell Dallas wasn't convinced, but she remained quiet, clinging to me in silence. I gave her a reassuring smile, though I wasn't sure if I could manage to make it seem convincing. I just wanted this to be over.
"Are you ready, sis?" Taylor asked gently, leaning down so she was eye level with me.
"I guess," I replied, my voice small.
I didn't feel ready, but I wasn't going to let my fear show in front of the girls.
"I'll be gentle, Amelia. I promise," Taylor said with a sympathetic smile as Karlie walked in, her hands full of charts.
She sat at the desk, clicking away on the computer, and I was relieved she wasn't going to be watching the whole process. I opened my mouth when Taylor asked, trying to stay calm as she began her inspection. She called out numbers and words that I didn't quite understand, but they didn't matter. The more important thing was keeping my nerves under control, not showing the girls how much I dreaded this. When she finished, she let me close my mouth and gave me a soft smile.
"We're still just going to polish today," she said, her tone gentle. "But I do want you to come back for a full cleaning and two fillings, when the girls aren't here. It'll be easier for you then."
She switched out the explorer for the polisher, a tool that seemed even more intimidating than the explorer.
"Okay," I said quietly, relieved that at least the worst part was over for now.
She wasn't going to make me go through the whole process today. Taylor turned to the girls, showing them the polisher with a smile.
"This is what we use to clean your teeth," she explained, demonstrating how it worked on me first. "It's a little noisy, but it's nothing to worry about."
She was trying to make it sound so simple, but I could see the girls still watching closely, their eyes wide with a mix of curiosity and uncertainty.I had hoped my turn would be over soon, but Taylor seemed to be taking her time, explaining everything to the girls in detail. Part of me was grateful she was being thorough, but another part of me just wanted to leave. I was more worried about Dallas, whose toothache I could see was starting to bother her again. I knew her experience wasn't going to be this simple, and the thought of her going through something more painful than a polish made my stomach flip. After what felt like an eternity, Taylor finished and leaned my chair back up to its normal position. I sat up and immediately felt a wave of relief wash over me. It was over, for now, anyway.
"See? There's nothing to it, and it's really quick. Who wants to go next?" Taylor asked, her voice light and friendly.
Dallas immediately hid behind me, her little hands clutching my leg. Her face was still buried in my side, and I could feel her shaking slightly.
"I'll go," Paige said, her voice a little hesitant, but she was clearly trying to be brave.
Her eyes flickered to Dallas, who was still clinging to me, before she looked up at Taylor.
"What do I do next?" Paige asked, her voice small but determined.
Taylor smiled warmly at Paige.
"Just like your mom, we'll get you all set up and show you everything before we start. You're going to do great."
As Taylor led Paige to the chair, I couldn't help but glance at Dallas, who was still hiding in my arms. I rubbed her back gently, wishing I could take away her anxiety. This whole experience was far from easy for any of us.
