PAIGE'S POV

"Owie," I whimpered, a sharp pain suddenly flaring up in my mouth.

It felt like my teeth were being squeezed, and I couldn't stop the tears from welling up in my eyes.

"What's wrong, Paige?" my dad asked, his voice filled with concern.

He looked over at me from the couch, his brow furrowed in worry.

"My mouth hurts," I managed to say between soft sobs, pressing my hand to my cheek as the pain continued to throb.

My mom turned around from the kitchen, her expression turning serious.

"Oh, honey, has it just started hurting, or has it been bothering you for a while?" she asked, her voice gentle but full of concern.

"A bit," I mumbled, feeling embarrassed that it had been hurting for a while, but I hadn't said anything sooner.

The pain was only getting worse now.

"I think maybe we should go see Auntie Taylor so she can take a look at it and help your mouth feel better," my mom said sympathetically, her tone soft but firm as she tried to comfort me.

I looked over at Dallas, who was sitting beside me, her eyes wide and nervous.

"Mommy, I don't have to go, do I?" she asked, her voice tinged with anxiety.

"Oh, Dallas," my mom replied, turning slightly to look at her. "She was telling me the other day that you girls are both due for your cleanings, so you should come along too. You might not get your turn today, but at least you'll be there in case she has time to look at you."

Dallas looked at me, her face scrunching up with hesitation. I could tell she wasn't thrilled about the idea, but she didn't argue. I wasn't exactly excited either I didn't want there to be something wrong with my teeth, but I knew if I went to Auntie Taylor, she'd be able to help.

"Come on, let's go, girls," our mom said, grabbing the car keys from the kitchen counter. "I'll call Taylor on the way."

We both stood up nervously, and I followed Dallas as we made our way to the car. It was a little reassuring that both Mom and Dad were coming today. It felt easier, knowing one of them would be with each of us. Last time, when Mom had to handle both of us on her own, it had been a bit of a disaster, so this time felt like it might go more smoothly. Once we were all in the car, my mom started the engine and dialed Auntie Taylor's number on the car's speakerphone. The soft sound of the ringing filled the car for a moment before the call connected.

"Hello?" came Taylor's voice through the speakers, calm and warm.

"Hi, Tay," Mom greeted her. "Quick question do you have any availability today? Paige has a toothache, and I'm kind of worried about it."

"Oh no! Poor Paige," Taylor said, her voice full of sympathy. "But yeah, of course, you can bring her in. Karlie and I just finished with our last patient, so we're just tidying up. We can see her right now if you're on your way."

Mom let out a relieved sigh.

"That's amazing, thank you so much, Tay! We're already in the car, so we'll be there soon."

"It's no problem at all, sis," Taylor replied warmly. "See you soon."

"Thanks again, we'll be there shortly," Mom said, hanging up the phone.

She looked at us, her voice reassuring.

"Alright, girls, just a little longer, okay? We'll be there soon, and Auntie Taylor is going to help you, Paige."

I nodded, trying to calm myself down, but the truth was, I was still scared. I didn't want there to be anything seriously wrong with my teeth. The thought of needles or drills made my stomach turn, and I couldn't help but feel anxious. What if it was something really bad? What if I needed a cavity filled or something worse? Dallas shifted beside me, her nervousness mirroring my own. I could tell she was worried too, even though she was trying to hide it. She always tried to be brave for me, but I could see the way her hands fidgeted in her lap. As we drove, the car seemed to be filled with the sound of my anxious thoughts, the quiet hum of the road beneath us doing little to calm my nerves. I kept my hand pressed against my cheek, still feeling the dull ache, wondering what Auntie Taylor would say when she looked at me. I just hoped everything would be okay.
