KARLIE'S POV
I snapped out of my thoughts, startled by Taylor's voice.
"Huh, what? Oh, me? Yeah, I'm fine," I answered hesitantly, not wanting to draw attention to how rattled I was feeling.
Taylor's gaze softened, and she raised an eyebrow.
"Karlie, I know something's going on. I noticed you tense up when I was filling Amelia's tooth earlier. What's up? You know you can tell me anything," she said with genuine concern in her voice.
I tried to brush it off, offering a small smile.
"Nothing, really. It's fine," I responded, though I wasn't entirely convincing.
Taylor wasn't having it. She pressed a little more, leaning in slightly.
"If it's nothing, I assume you wouldn't mind if we gave you a quick checkup while we're here, then?" she asked, clearly trying to make sure everything was okay.
I froze, not expecting that.
"Oh, um..." I stammered, a little caught off guard.
"I'll be quick, I just want to make sure you're okay," Taylor assured me gently, a knowing look in her eyes.
I shifted uncomfortably.
"I don't really think that's a good idea. It's not really necessary either," I said, trying to back out of it.
Before I could say anything more, Taylor glanced over at Heather and Amelia, who were standing nearby, and offered,
"Hey girls, I think I have some paperwork in the back that needs shredding. Do you want to go ahead and take care of that for me?"
The girls nodded and went off into the back, giving Taylor the chance to focus fully on me. She turned back to me with a calm, but firm look.
"And as for you, let's go get you checked out. It'll give me peace of mind," she said sympathetically, and before I could protest any further, she gently but firmly guided me into one of the exam rooms.
I was starting to feel cornered.
"Taylor, I really don't think this is necessary," I said again, my voice trailing off in uncertainty.
"Unfortunately, you don't get a choice in the matter," she replied, a smile that was both teasing and reassuring appearing on her face as she lowered the chair.
I felt my stomach churn as I watched her grab her gloves and mask. I could feel my body tensing, a mix of nerves and embarrassment flooding through me. Taylor quickly grabbed her mirror and explorer, ready to start.
"Alright, open for me," she said softly.
I hesitated, my lips trembling slightly as I stared at her instead of following her instructions. The thought of being in the chair, vulnerable and at the mercy of the dentist's tools, made my anxiety spike.
"I won't hurt you, Karlie. I just want to take a quick look. You're past due for a checkup anyways," Taylor said, her voice soothing but firm.
I took a deep breath and reluctantly opened my mouth, feeling like I was walking into a trap. As Taylor checked my teeth, I felt a knot form in my stomach. She was so calm and efficient, but all I could think about was how much I didn't want to be here.
"You do have a bit of a cavity here," she said after a few moments.
"It's not bad, though. It'll be a really simple filling," she added, taking the tools out of my mouth and walking over to the drawers.
