"Hey look! They have superhero novels!" Freddy said, showing Billy. During their free period, they had gone to the library a lot recently. Darla had suggested these visits because of the low staffing. And this was her contribution to the school community. "Why are we here?" Billy asked, scanning the shelves. Slowly picking up one, he read "Analytics of America's Heroes. Sounds like a real page Turner." He chucks the book to Freddy. Who catches it, "Actually this one is pretty good. Superheroes really are super financially destructive." A girl peeked from the corner, sliding a book out of its shelf. "Check it, has all the reports of Superman up to 2018." The girl said handing Freddy a book "o-oh cool! Thanks!" Freddy said as he took it. "And here, noticed you didn't have one yesterday." The girl said, handing Billy a civics book.

"You in Harvey's third period?" Billy asked. "I'm in the very back, you guys ready to check out?" She asked. "Yeah, thanks," Billy said as he smiled for a second. She nodded as she took them to the check-out counter. "Where are the other TAs?" Billy asked. "No show, as usual." She responded, scanning their books. "Due by Friday, enjoy." "Thanks," Freddy said. "Yeah, thanks," Billy said as the two left, Billy glanced before he left by the door, she was leaning on her hand, against her cheek, she looked really bored. Billy wondered what expression she had under that thin mask. He saw her name tag, Y/n, he continued out with Freddy.

Billy walked into his third period and looked around for the girl he met earlier, Y/n. She was already there and sitting in the back, in that same bored position. During class, he'd use the civics manual she had lent him. He had thought about how she didn't ignore Freddy, which felt rare around these parts. About how she knew he didn't have a manual. She didn't seem like she cared too much about anything. Billy ended up getting a B on the quiz, which was significant, considering his grades. He wasn't that good at civics. He looked for her at lunch, but she wasn't there. "Looking for that girl?" Freddy asked next to him. "Shut up," Billy said. "Well I just finished my novel, how was your civics quiz?" Freddy asked. "I got a B," Billy said. "Better than usual..? Wanna get more books? I'm done here anyway." Freddy asked. "Sure," Billy said as they threw away their trays and went to the library. When they walked in, Y/n was running and jumping on the ledge of the cart, wheeling around the room very fast.

"Oh hey!" She said quickly stopping. "It gets boring.. You guys need anything?" She asked. "Got any more superhero novels?" Freddy asked. "Yeah, hero reference?" "Let's do Aquaman." Y/n nods and kicks off a shelf to grab the book. "Alright, you need anything?" She asked Billy. "There's a test on Thursday, want another manual?" "Yeah, thanks." He said. They went to the counter as she scanned the books. "How do you know about the tests?" Billy asked. "His 5th period takes them first, they all get their manuals here." She explains "due Monday." She handed it to them. "Bye-bye." She said, "Mind if we come by Tomorrow?" Freddy asked. "Nope. Just gonna be doing wheelies on the book cart." She says, almost devastated. "Thanks," Billy adds, before leaving with his brother, before glancing one last time.

Why was she wearing that mask? Was she sick? Was it some crazy scar? Billy walked into his third period, searching for the same mask in the back. Today he sat next to her. "Hey, mind if I-" she nodded and said, "Sure." He sat down next to her, as the civics class began. She was drawing something on some scrap piece of paper. It was Shazam, he blushed and smirked.

Billy asked, "You like the red cyclone?" She quickly covered it, "That was.. actually really good? Do you take art?" He asks. "Ha, no. I'm just doodling, I like his costume design." She said, He blushed with a smile again. "Why not?" "This is enough for me." She shook her head. "You should go into an art elective." He said. "Thanks." She said, blushing a bit. "It's C by the way." She said pointing her pen to the packet they were working on. "Thanks." He responded. "Do you just study all that Civics has to offer on the job Orr..?" Y/n shrugs. "I haven't read any of those manuals. Seems like it worked for you though." Billy tilts his head, "Yeah for a B." She shrugs, "Better than a C."

"My usual average." Billy ticks. "The American school system is a lie," Y/n says blankly, he hums, with a nod. "Yeah.." Y/n brought a very interesting conversation to the table, as odd as it was. "B." They whisper, and Billy hesitantly circles in the answer. He glanced over to see their entire worksheet filled out. Maybe she was just a Civics whiz. Or an Avid copier. A girl's hair was whipped behind her, into Billy's desk the next second. He sighs and begins to peel it off when a dot of light falls on the girl's hair. Slowly falling until bursting a flame. "Uh- Fire-Fire!" He stands back, pushing the table forward. The girl shoots up, screaming.

While the teacher barked commands and searched for his water bottle, Billy saw you. Grasping your hand for dear life. Y/n looks to the side before pulling the fire alarm. The chaos of a class began to rush out the door. Y/n took this opportunity to use the window. Billy glanced at the door before quickly joining her silently. "Ugh! Just because I slightly hate someone doesn't mean I want to set them on fire!" Y/n shouts, "It was one thought okay? like one ember!" She glares at the sky, eyes turning a vibrant yellow.

She digs into her pocket, pulling out a golden Key. Clearly more expensive than anything in the school. "I want a Refund!" She chucks it into the sky. Only for it to be thrown into her face the next second. The first second, Billy was suspicious, the next shocked, and the last minute a bit confused. The sun had just thrown something at her. "Whatever!" Y/n dusts themselves off. Billy takes a step forward, grass crunching under his shoe. For some reason this felt like a siren to Y/n, who pounced from the wall, in front of him, nails suddenly doubling in length and sharpness.

He almost even heard a growl. But the moment she saw him, they unsheathed. "No one's going to believe you." And with that, his crush was walking away. Maybe Y/n was a bit more like him than he knew.
