It'd been a few weeks since I'd stopped responding to chemotherapy and the doctors told me there wasn't anything else they could do for me. I'd been at home since then just sort of hanging out, not really sure what else to do. I'd already completed my bucket list and I didn't really have the strength to do anything else.
The Ducks came by just about every day. We'd watch movies, play board games, or just hang out in general. They'd tell me about school and hockey, two things I missed dearly. We never talked about my illness and if they did they made it sound like I had nothing more than a cold instead of terminal cancer.
When I'd first been diagnosed, it had been a shock to everyone. I was the picture of health and to suddenly learn that I had cancer was a huge punch to the gut. I kept it a secret from the Ducks for as long as I could but once I started chemo, there had been no hiding it any longer.
They'd all been really supportive during my fight. They even shaved their heads so I wouldn't feel awkward when my hair started falling out. They'd all take turns keeping me company during treatments, veg out with me when the medicine made me feel terrible, and they helped me with a number of items on my bucket list. I was so lucky to have them.
A knock on my door tore me from my thoughts.
"Come in." I called out, weakly. I sat up in my bed as best I could.
One by one, the Ducks came pouring in. I smiled sadly at them as they all gathered around my bed.
"Hey guys." I said.
"Hey, Y/N/N." Charlie said.
"How are you feeling?" Adam asked.
"Ready to lift a car, cake-eater." I said back. They all laughed at my comment.
"We brought videos and popcorn." Guy said, holding up a plastic bag with the 'Video Universe' logo on it.
"And tons of ice cream that we dropped off down in your freezer." Dwayne added.
"Thanks guys." I said.
Jesse and Averman sat down on either side of me as the others spread out around my room. Dean popped in one of the video tapes and we all turned to watch as the previews started playing.
"You missed a great fight today at school, Y/N." Luis said, shoving some popcorn in his mouth.
"Yeah! Troy and Chad got into a huge fight today in the hallway. It took three teachers to pry them apart!" Dean said, excitedly.
"Wow, cool." I said, amused. "Any lost limbs?"
"Nah, not this time. But Troy had quite the shiner by the end of it." Fulton said.
As we watched the movie, I felt myself overcome with emotion.
"Guys?" I asked. They all turned to look at me. "I just want to say that I love you all. So much."
"We love you too, Y/N." Dean said. The others all made noises of agreement.
"I'm gonna miss you all." I whispered, biting my lip.
"Stop it, Y/N." Charlie said, shaking his head.
"I mean it. You guys are some of the most important people in my life." I said, tears finally coming to my eyes.
"Please don't cry, Y/N. You're gonna make us cry." Averman said, taking off his glasses and wiping his own eyes.
But the flood gates have already opened. I'm a sobbing mess as the guys all gather around my bed. I do my best to rein in my tears but I'm still sniffling after a few minutes.
"Eulogize me." I said.
"What?" Jesse asked, clearly confused.
"Eulogize me. I won't get a chance to hear what you guys are going to say when I...so I wanna hear it now. Eulogize me." I said, sitting up more, slowly.
The guys all look at each other before turning back to me.
"Who goes first?" I asked, looking around at them.
"I will." Charlie finally volunteers after a moment of silence. He clears his throat before grabbing my hand.
"Y/N, we've known each other for the longest time..." Charlie starts but falls off as his voice breaks.
"And you've been the best friend any of us could have ever asked for." Adam picks it up before sniffling himself.
"You might not have known it, but at one point or another, we've all sort of had crushes on you." Luis adds with a watery laugh. I can't help but giggle at that, not knowing if that was true or not but going with it anyway.
"You were there when we needed you..." Jesse said.
"Like when I was learning to skate..." Fulton adds.
"Or when my parents got divorced..." Dean said, a tear rolling down his cheek.
"And when things got bad..." Dwayne said, referring to my illness. I grabbed his hand and squeezed as a sob escaped both his and my lips.
"You always had a smile on your face." Guy adds.
"You never stopped laughing." Averman said, laughing slightly himself before turning serious again. "We're gonna miss you so much."
That was it. Those last words had everyone sobbing. They gathered around me closer, all coming in for a giant group hug.
"We love you, Y/N."
(A/N: Thanks again for the request! I hope you liked it! This one was kind of hard to write and it took me about 3 drafts before I got one that I liked. What did you lovelies think? Let me know in the comments! That's all for now! Until next time! Thanks!!)
