Snow fell lightly around me as I walked down the sidewalk toward my boyfriend's apartment building. I pulled my coat tighter around myself as a particularly cold gust of wind blew. It was around noon on Christmas so I knew that Dean and his family were more than likely done opening presents. I myself had opened my presents alone as usual as my parents were off doing, well, whatever it was they did when they ditched me.

Climbing the stairs to the Portman's apartment, I mentally prepared myself for interacting with Dean's parents. They weren't the nicest people but I always tried to be civil towards them. I raised my fist to knock on the door but it was swiftly pulled open before I made contact with the wood. Dean stood there, clearly surprised to see me.

"Y/N! I didn't think you'd be here this soon. I was actually coming to your place." Dean said, thrusting his arm into the sleeve of his jacket.

Before I could respond, I heard the clattering of a dish being dropped or, more than likely, thrown followed by two voices yelling words that I couldn't quite make out aside from a few expletives. Dean looked at me sheepishly, a rare look for him, before he stepped into the hallway and closed the door behind him.

"Uh, yeah. Sorry. I was just, well, I just wanted to see you." I said.

"What about your parents? I mean, it's Christmas." Dean asked.

I looked down at my shoes. "What about yours?" I asked back.

"Point taken." Dean said, looking back at the closed door with a sigh. He raised an eyebrow at me, a little smile playing at his lips. "Wanna get out of here?"

I nodded with a small smile of my own. "Yeah."

Dean reached forward and grabbed my hand. I gratefully grabbed his in return and with that we were off.

Dean and I walked aimlessly for a few hours before our feet led us to the familiar park that we frequented as kids. Walking up to the playground equipment, I took a seat on the swing. It creaked rustily as I swayed back and forth. Dean followed suit and sat on the swing next to mine. We sat in silence for a while before I decided to speak up.

"What were they fighting about this time?" I asked.

Dean shrugged. "Apparently, my dad bought his gifts in bulk this year."

I tilted my head to the side, not really getting what he meant.

He sighed. "He got my mom a sweater...but his secret girlfriend's name was on the gift tag instead of hers."

"Ooh." I said with a wince.

"Yeah. I mean, he got them the same thing for Christmas so he wouldn't mix things up and get caught but he stilled managed to screw it up." Dean said with a sardonic laugh.

"I'm sorry." I said after a brief silence.

"Don't be. I've always known he was a scumbag." Dean said, swaying on the swing. "Just thought he might actually get it together for once. Stupid of me, huh?"

"No." I said with a sad smile.

       Dean shrugged again. "It's whatever."

I nodded, letting the subject drop.

"How 'bout you?" Dean asked, twirling his swing to face me. "What about your folks?"

"Same as always. No parents. Just me and the Christmas tree that I decorated myself with presents that I picked out myself." I said.

       "I'm sorry." Dean said.

"Don't be." I said, echoing his words back at him.

We sat in silence for a moment, watching the snow flurry down around us.

"Well, at least we'll be heading back to Minnesota in a few days." I said.

"Yeah. Back with our real family." Dean said.

       "Yeah." I said back.

After sitting together in comfortable silence for a while, the cold finally started to get to us. We started the trek back to my apartment. With Dean's hand in mine, we huddled together as the cold December wind blew around us.

"When we're older, done with school and in our own apartment together, we'll start traditions of our own. I promise." Dean said to me, softly.

"I'm gonna hold you to that." I said back, just as softly.

"Good." Dean said, pressing a kiss to the side of my head.

More than ever, I was looking forward to the future. Our future.
