"Bye, Mom! I'll see you later!" I called over my shoulder as I headed out the door.
"Don't stay out too late, Y/N!" My mom called back.
"I won't!" I shut the door behind me as I stepped out onto the front porch.
I took a moment to admire the falling snow before making my way down the front steps. I quickly walked down the pathway to the side walk and across the street to Adam's house. Adam was my...best friend? Boyfriend? I honestly wasn't sure anymore. I mean, we knew we liked each other but neither of us was making the first move it seemed.
As I walked up the pathway to the Banks' front door, the door opened and out stepped Adam. I heard him call out to his own parents before shutting the door and turning to face me with a smile.
"Hey, Y/N." Adam said, walking down his front steps and putting on a pair of gloves.
"Hey. You ready to go?" I asked.
Adam nodded and the two of us started the walk to Rosland Park. They were having a New Year's Eve celebration, like every year, and Adam and I were attending alone together for the first time. I was extremely excited because it seemed that this would finally be the year I got a New Year's kiss. It seemed like out of all my friends I was the only one to never receive one and I was determined to rectify that fact.
"Y/N? Are you listening?"
"Huh?" I asked, looking up at Adam. He was looking at me curiously and I knew I had missed something. "Sorry, I totally spaced there. What were you saying?"
"Nothing. It wasn't important" Adam said.
"If you're sure." I said, nodding.
As we got to an intersection, Adam reached out and grabbed my hand. I looked at him surprised and saw a slight blush on his cheeks.
"Um, for safety." Adam said, lamely.
"Right. Safety." I said back.

When we got to Rosland Park, we all but ran to the hot chocolate cart, ready to get some warmth back into us from the walk over. Adam insisted on paying, as always, and I just rolled my eyes. I was fully capable of paying for my own drink but Adam wouldn't hear of it.
"You can owe me." He said, as he always did.
We walked along, sipping on our hot chocolates as we went, taking in all the lights and decorations that were still up from the recent holidays. Kids and adults milled about, playing in the snow and walking along the pathways. I watched couple after couple stroll by and felt my heart hurt. I wanted what they had. And I wanted it with Adam.
"Hey, Adam?" I asked as we walked.
"Yeah?" Adam answered as he took a sip of his hot chocolate.
"Do you ever think about...dating?" I asked, trying to think of where I was going with this.
"Dating?" Adam asked, looking at me.
"Yeah, dating. You know, going to the movies together, going for dinners, talking, hugging?" I said.
"Y/N, we already do all that stuff." Adam said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
"...kissing?" I added when he was done.
"Y/N..." Adam trailed off.
"I mean, we know we like each other, right? Like, like like each other?" I asked, stopping in my tracks.
"Y/N-"
"And we're at the age where dating is normal and even encouraged!" I said, cutting him off.
"Y/N-"
"That is if you even want to date! For all I know you could want nothing to do with the whole thing. I know how important hockey is to you and if you'd even have the time for dating because of it is a whole other thing." I rambled on. I figured as long as I kept talking, he couldn't reject me.
Before I knew it, Adam threw his empty cup to the ground, grabbed my cheeks and planted his lips right on mine. Fireworks immediately erupted through me as we stood there, lips locked. Adam went to pull away but I pressed my lips harder onto his, not wanting our kiss to end. I felt Adam smile into the kiss and I did as well. We pulled apart, both gasping for air.
"Does that answer your question?" Adam asked, trying to catch his breath.
"I could use a bit more clarification." I joked, leaning back in.
Our lips met again, this time in a slow kiss. As we pulled apart, literal fireworks went off behind us as the crowd around us shouted 'HAPPY NEW YEAR!' We looked up at the display, watching the bright colors fill the night sky. Turning back to each other, we both had huge smiles on our faces. What a way to start the new year.
