For the last few days, I'd noticed my friend and teammate, Dean, acting...weirdly. His normally loud and overconfident nature had been replaced with this shy, quiet very un-Dean-like person. And it only seemed to happen around me. Honestly, it was starting to freak me out a little bit.

It all started when I sat down next to him at practice one day. Normally, we'd joke around while on the bench but Dean was surprisingly quiet. I tried multiple times to talk to him but he'd just awkwardly sit there, giving one word answers. I didn't think much of it at the time but looking back now, it was just the beginning of his odd behavior.

The day after practice, when we'd normally be passing notes during history class, Dean kept scribbling out whatever he was going to write to me and instead turned to pay attention in class. Pay attention. In class. DEAN! Talk about weird. But I just brushed it off. Maybe he was having trouble in the class and needed to get a good grade to keep playing hockey? That had to be it.

The day after that, I sat next to Dean at lunch. He seemed to be a little bit more like himself as he'd been joking around with Fulton before I sat down but once I did, that came to an abrupt halt. In fact, Dean then muttered something and then grabbed his tray, stood up and left. I asked Fulton what all that was about but he just shrugged. Thanks, Fult, that's helpful. Not.

I went to ask him if we were okay shortly afterward but he just looked at me wide-eyed and yelled gibberish at me. Something like "WILLYOUGOOUTWITHMEPLEASE?!" before he ran away from me, leaving me stunned and confused. I'd never seen big bad Dean Portman run from anyone.

Now, sitting in the quad, I was really starting to get worried about Dean. I decided I was going to get to the bottom of things once and for all. I got up and walked to the school's hockey rink, sure that's where Dean would be with Fulton. I checked the locker room but only found their bags so they must have been on the ice already.

I quickly but quietly made my way to the bench and sure enough, there were the Bash Brothers taking turns taking shots in the empty goal. I was about to call out to them when I heard Dean growl and throw his stick down on the ice.

"I just can't do it, dude! Every time I'm around her I just...freeze! I can't get any words out!" Dean exclaimed.

"Not entirely true, bro. I mean, you did technically ask her out. You just kind of...screamed it at her instead of asking." Fulton placated.

"God, I'm as big of a spaz as Conway." Dean bemoaned.

"You just need to grow a pair and ask her out clearly. Just say 'Y/N, will you go out with me?'. Simple as that." Fulton said, taking another shot.

"Easier said than done." Dean sighed.

Back on the bench, I was stunned. Dean liked...me? Dean Portman? Liked me? A warm feeling spread through me at the idea and I couldn't help but smile. I'd thought of Dean as more than a friend for a while now but had no idea he felt the same way. I squealed internally before standing and heading out onto the ice.

       "Hey, guys." I called out.

"Y/N!" Dean exclaimed, whipping his head around in my direction.

        "Hey, Y/N." Fulton said, casually.

"Um, Fult? Can I talk to Dean privately for a minute?" I asked.

"Sure." Fulton said with a smile. "See you later, man." He said to Dean, who shot him a panicked look. Fulton just snickered and skated away.

"Hey, Dean." I said, shoving my now cold hands into my jacket pockets.

"H-hi." Dean returned with an awkward wave.

"I was thinking of going to get some ice cream and wanted to know if you wanted to go with me?" I asked.

       "U-um..." Dean stammered.

"You know, like a date? If that's okay with you?" I asked, shyly but clearly.

Dean's eyes grew wide and his mouth dropped open. "...really?"

"Yeah, really." I said with a giggle.

A smile quickly spread across Dean's face. "YES! I-I mean, yes. I'd love to."

"Awesome." I said, returning the smile.

"Just let me take a shower and get changed and we can go." Dean said. "Can't go on a date when I reek."

I laughed as Dean realized he said the last part out loud, a blush spreading across his face but he smiled anyway.

"Go on. I'll be in the lobby waiting for you." I said, gesturing to the double doors off to the side.

       "Cool." Dean said.

       "Cool." I said back.

With that, Dean skated forward and gave me a kiss on the cheek, a bit awkwardly given he still had his helmet on but I blushed nonetheless. He skated towards the locker room and just before the door closed I heard him let out a 'whoop!'. I laughed at his excitedness but did a little 'whoop!' of my own as well. I couldn't wait for our date!
