The bruises on my back were still tender as I walked into hockey practice. I'd changed at home to avoid anyone seeing them but was still cautious not to let my jersey ride up. My dad had gone on another drinking bender and I was the unlucky target when he returned home this time. I was just grateful he hadn't gone after one of my younger siblings.
Entering the locker room, I was greeted by a chorus of 'hello's as well as a kiss on the cheek from my boyfriend, Adam. I hesitated slightly when he went to give me a hug but I hoped he didn't notice. Unfortunately, he had.
"You okay?" Adam asked.
Not trusting my voice, I nodded. Before he could press the matter, Coach Orion called us out onto the ice. As we filed out of the room, I subconsciously pulled at my jersey again.
~~~
"Good job out there, team." Coach Orion said, looking up from his clipboard.
We were back in the locker room again after a particularly grueling practice. I was exhausted and wanted nothing more than to take a hot shower. I waited, however, until the team had all finished changing and left the locker room before starting to change myself.
I gingerly started to remove my shirt when I heard a gasp behind me. Quickly spinning around, I came face to face with Adam.
'Damn it! I should have known he'd wait for me.' I thought frantically.
"Y/N..." Adam started but trailed off. He looked like he was having trouble finding the words he wanted to say.
"I'm fine. I just got checked too hard during practice is all." I tried to explain but the look on his face said he wasn't convinced.
"Y/N, there's no way those bruises just happened today." Adam said, softly.
I looked down at the ground. There was no use trying to lie to him. Adam could read me like a book.
"It's not as bad as it looks." I said, quietly.
"Let me see." Adam said.
Not wanting to argue, I turned around again and lifted my shirt just enough for him to see the bruises that littered my back. I heard Adam gasp quietly before a felt him gingerly touch my back. I flinched slightly at the touch and he quickly pulled his hand away.
"It was your dad, wasn't it?"
I quickly turned back around, dropping my shirt back down. "What? No! It was...it was..." I tried to think of anyone, anything else that I could blame them on but came up empty.
"Was what, Y/N? Is this like when you came to school with a black eye and said you got it rough housing with your siblings?" Adam asked.
I didn't answer him. I had hoped he'd forgotten about that.
"Or when you had those cuts on your legs and you said you fell at the ice rink?" Adam asked. He was visibly angry now. Not at me, I knew but at the situation.
Again, I didn't answer him. Tears sprang up in my eyes as I remembered the other times. Seeing my tears, Adam's eyes softened.
"I don't know what I did..." I started to say but was cut off by a sob.
Adam quickly yet tenderly gathered me up into his arms, mindful of my back. I barely noticed any pain as my entire focus was on crying. I buried my face into his chest as he placed his chin on top of my head. I cried out all my frustration, all my pain. I don't know how long we were standing there before I finally started to calm down.
"We need to tell someone about this." Adam said, softly.
"No!" I exclaimed, jumping back slightly. "I don't want anyone to know about this!"
"Y/N, I can't just stand by and let this keep happening to you!" Adam said back.
I went quiet. I knew he was right but what could be done? And it wasn't just me to think about but my siblings as well.
"But what can we do?" I asked in a hushed voice.
"We can tell Coach. And then we'll take it from there." Adam said, placing a lingering kiss to my forehead. "One step at a time."
"One step at a time." I repeated.
"First thing's first, you get changed. I'll go find Coach. We'll meet you in his office, okay?" Adam asked.
I nodded. With one last forehead kiss, Adam finally pulled his arms away and made his way out of the locker room. I quickly got changed and grabbed my gear before heading to Coach's office. It was going to be tough but as long as I had Adam by my side, I knew things would get better.
(A/N: Thanks again to zbansks for the request! I hope you liked it! Again, sorry it took me so long! To my readers, if you're in a situation similar to Y/N's, I want you to know that it's not your fault and that you are loved. Stay strong! That's all for now! Until next time! Thanks!!)
