"C'mon, guys! You need to eat before practice!"
I called up the stairs as I finished plating the pancakes. It was 9AM Saturday morning and we were already running late. The sound of thundering feet greeted me from the floor above as my three boys rushed around to get ready for hockey practice. I rolled my eyes good naturedly. Having to get four kids and a husband out the door on time was never easy but I loved the chaos.
Hearing little footsteps coming down the stairs, I turned to see my youngest and only girl, Hallie, scooting down the last few steps on her butt with her snow boots in her hands.
"Mommy, I wanna play hockey too!" Hallie said, dropping her boots and climbing up into her booster seat. I picked the boots up, knowing they was an accident waiting to happen with three boys rushing around.
"You still have two years before you become a Mini-Mite, little miss." I said, placing a pancake on her plate and kissing the top of her head.
"Two years? That's forever!" Hallie complained. She grabbed her fork and slowly started eating.
"Just enjoy your one on one 'practices' with Daddy for now." I said back.
Before I could say more, Danny, Matt, and Joey came barreling down the stairs, dressed and ready, before scrambling into their seats. They were quick to pick up their forks and start in on their pancakes. A little too quick for my liking.
"Hey, hey! Slow down guys. The rink isn't going anywhere." I said, taking my own seat. I grabbed my coffee cup and took a healthy swig of it.
"Mom, you said we were running late!" Matt said, syrup dripping down his chin.
"Not late enough that you should risk choking." I retorted, handing him a napkin. He messily wiped his face and I knew a wet wipe was in his future.
"Listen to your mother, kids."
I turned with a smile to see my husband, Adam, coming down the stairs. He came up beside me, placing a kiss on my lips that made my heart flutter. Together for nearly 20 years, married for over 10 of those years and his kisses still had the same effect on me.
Adam and I had met when we were in Peewees; him on the Hawks and me on District 5. We didn't exactly get off to the best start but once he joined the Ducks, we quickly warmed up to each other. We'd been inseparable ever since. Best friends for years, Adam finally asked me out when the Ducks had beat Varsity during our first year at Eden Hall. I, in return, of course, asked him what took him so long.
"Ew! Mooom, Daaad! We're trying to eat!" Our oldest, Danny, said, a look of disgust on his face.
"Yeah, ew!" Joey said, ever Danny's shadow.
Adam and I rolled our eyes exaggeratedly at our sons' antics, earning a giggle from all four kids. Adam reached down and took my coffee cup from my hands and took a quick sip before looking at his watch.
"Okay, guys, finish eating 'cause we gotta go." Adam said, giving me back my cup.
The boys ate with a renewed gusto while Hallie daintily finished her own pancake. Once they were done, I wiped my two younger ones faces while the two older insisted on doing it themselves; too old at 9 and 7 for mom's help they claimed.
"Go brush your teeth, boys." Adam said, knowing they would have forgotten as usual.
We both laughed as they just about climbed over each other to be the first up the stairs. Having already brushed Hallie's teeth when she got up, I was free to gather everyone's plates while she put her boots on all by herself. They would most likely wind up on the wrong feet, but hey, we were working on it.
Putting the dishes in the dishwasher, I quickly stood up when I felt a pair of arms around my waist. Spinning around, I was greeted with a kiss which I happily returned, uninterrupted by kids. As we broke apart, Adam's arms hanging loosely around my waist, I could only sigh in contentment.
"Mommy, Daddy! Come on!"
The moment broken, Adam and I followed after our youngest to the front hall where the boys were already putting on their coats and hats. After helping zip up coats and putting our own on, the six of us were ready to go.
"I have to pee!" Joey announced.
Well, almost ready. Quickly taking off his outerwear, he ran to the downstairs powder room.
"Grab your gear, boys." Adam reminded.
Danny and Matt were quick to grab their hockey bags and sticks and were out the door in a flash. Picking up Joey's bag, I handed it to Adam, knowing my youngest boy would most likely forget it in his haste to get out the door.
"I'll wait for Joey." I said, throwing Adam the car keys.
I'll go warm up the car." Adam said, jingling the keys for me to hear.
"Thanks, Charming." I said, pulling out the old pet name from our high school days.
Adam beamed at me before bending down to scoop up Hallie in his arms. A loud laugh burst from her as Adam blew a raspberry against her cheek, making me laugh at the joyful noise. As they left through door, I heard the toilet flush followed by the sink running. Joey came running out of the bathroom and looked around.
"Where's my bag?" He asked.
"Your dad has it." I answered as I helped him into his coat. "Grab your stick and let's go!"
Grabbing said hockey stick, he all but flew out the door. I was right behind him, locking the door as we left. Walking down the porch steps, I watched my kids pile into the car before being strapped into their booster seats by Adam. Soon enough, we were on our way to hockey practice. I checked my watch to see it was 9:48AM. We were late but I didn't care. It was days like this that I loved. Absolute chaos but in our own way, perfect.
