The cafeteria was loud, as usual. As I made my way through the lunch line, I could see my friends Dwayne, Julie and Connie sitting in our usual spot. I smiled as I looked over at them in what appeared to be deep conversation. The three of them were the first friends I made when I transferred to Eden Hall mid-semester last year and we'd been close ever since. Sure, I was friends with the other Ducks too but those three were my best friends.
I paid for my food and started walking over to them. They seemed to be whispering because I couldn't hear them until I got closer and even then I only caught the tail end of their conversation.
"...and don't tell Y/N. Promise?" I heard Dwayne whisper.
'Don't tell Y/N what?' I thought, curiously.
Before I could ask, Dwayne spotted me and waved at me with a smile. He'd been doing that a lot lately. The smile, not the wave. It wasn't his usual friendly 'howdy' smile but one that I noticed he only used for me. It sent butterflies flying around in my stomach and a hopeful feeling in my chest that maybe, just maybe, my secret crush might be returned.
"Hey guys!" I said as I sat down. "What are we talking about?"
"English class."
"Hockey practice."
"Titanic."
I gave them a weird look as they all answered at the same time. "Uh...okay. Why are you three being so weird?"
"We're not being weird. Who's being weird?" Dwayne babbled with a blush.
"What he means is, uh, we need to go! Coach needs to see us. Right, guys?" Connie said, grabbing her lunch tray and standing.
Julie and Dwayne vocalized their affirmation and said a hasty 'bye!' before they followed Connie out of the lunch room. I sat there almost dazedly for a moment before shrugging. 'Oh well. Must not have been my business.' I thought before digging into my food.

Over the next few days, my friends' weird behavior didn't go away. It seemed like every time I was around they would clam up or suddenly need to be somewhere else. 'Are they avoiding me?' I thought as they excused themselves from the lunch table yet again. I couldn't for the life of me think of anything I could have done to upset them but I was determined to make things right.
After classes were through for the day, I made my way to the boy's dorm building fully intent on making amends with Dwayne. As I rounded the corner of the hallway, I stopped in my tracks when I saw them. Julie and Connie and Dwayne. Standing outside his room, hugging and whispering. My heart broke a little as I saw how close they all were. 'Alright. Enough is enough!' I thought as I charged forward towards them.
"Hey!" I called out. I must have startled them because they all looked at me like deer caught in the headlights. "Care to finally tell me what's going on?"
"Y/N!" Dwayne exclaimed.
"What are you all some kind of throuple now? Cause last I checked, Connie you had Guy and Julie had Scooter." I said, my voice rising with each word.
"Wait. A throuple? Ew!" Julie said, making a disgusted face.
"Y/N, it's not like that at all!" Connie said, though she looked like she was trying hard not to laugh.
"Well, what is it then?!" I asked, throwing my hands in the air.
The two girls in front of me turned to Dwayne. "You're up, Cowboy." Connie said, patting his shoulder as Julie nodded. They then left without another word. Confused I turned to Dwayne.
Dwayne cleared his throat and took a step forward. "Okay. This wasn't exactly how I wanted to do this but here we go." He disappeared into his dorm for a second before emerging with a huge heart shaped card in his hand. "I know Valentine's Day isn't for a few more days but...well. Here, Y/N." Dwayne said, holding out the card to me.
It was the most beautiful card I had ever seen. It was red with white doily around the edges and pictures of roses drawn all over the front of it, each rose adorned with glitter. I gingerly took it into my hand. Opening it up, I gasped. Inside was written:
{Y/N, will you do me the honor of being my Valentine?}
{Love, Dwayne}
"What? Really?!" I asked, rereading the card a million times to make sure I wasn't seeing things.
"Really, really." Dwayne said, bashfully scratching the back of his neck.
"Wait, is that why you three have been so secretive?" I asked, looking between the three of them.
"Yeah, sorry 'bout that. They were helping me with designing the card and drawing the roses." Dwayne said. "Well, what do you say, Y/N? Will you be my Valentine and go on a date with me?"
"Yes! I mean, yes, I will." I exclaimed before checking my volume.
Dwayne beamed at me. He then reached out and took me into his arms in a sweet hug, careful of the card I was holding. I snuggled my face into his shoulder, breathing in his cologne.
"So...a throuple, huh?" Dwayne said with a laugh.
I groaned. "Oh god, I'm such an idiot!" I exclaimed.
"Well, if you're an idiot, at least you're my idiot." Dwayne said.
I laughed with him at that. As he pulled back to look at me, ours eyes met and a second later, so did our lips. I smiled into the kiss. This wasn't exactly the way I hoped we'd get together but I was happy nonetheless.
