It was only 7AM on Christmas morning but already the Mendoza house was filled with the sounds of laughter, joy, and the crinkling of wrapping paper being ripped off of presents. My family was spending the holiday with my boyfriend, Luis, and his family and despite the tight living situation, things had been going great. My mom and dad were happily chatting with Luis's father while my sister in law and brother sat on the living room floor watching the youngest members of the group, my nieces and nephews and my younger sister, open their presents at warp speed. My older sister, Luis's sisters and abuela were in the kitchen making a huge breakfast for everyone. Lastly, Luis and I were sat together on the well worn armchair, drinking hot cocoa.
"This is nice." Luis whispered to me.
"Yeah." I whispered back before placing a kiss to his cheek.
A squeal caught my attention as I saw my niece holding the Barbie doll she had been begging for over her head in triumph. "Santa read my letter!"
"Of course he did. You've been a very good girl this year." My brother said, looking at his wife out of the corner of his eye. She smiled conspiratorially at him.
"Well, I think that's the last of the presents." Mr. Mendoza said, gathering up some wrapping paper from the floor in true dad on Christmas morning fashion.
"Wait! There's one more." My little sister said, grabbing a small box from the back of the tree. "It's for you, Y/N!"
Surprised, I sat up slightly. I had already gotten everything I had asked for so I wasn't expecting an extra present.
My sister tossed me the present which I easily caught and looked at the tag. It read 'To: Y/N, From: Santa'. But I knew that handwriting anywhere. I turned to Luis with questioning eyes.
"Well, go on and open it. It is from Santa after all." Luis said with a glint in his eye.
I rolled my eyes at him without the younger ones seeing before carefully unwrapping the small present. Inside the wrapping paper was a green velvet box. As I opened the box, my hand flew to my mouth. Inside the box was the most beautiful necklace I'd ever seen. It had a blue crystal center stone with smaller clear crystals surrounding it, set in a rectangular gold-tone frame with a dainty chain attached.
"Luis..." I said but couldn't quite form any other words.
"Wow. Santa's got good taste in jewelry!" Luis joked, nudging me slightly.
"What?" I asked. I looked up to see nearly everyone watching us, including those that still believed in the jolly fat man. "I mean, you're right! Santa has very good taste."
My nieces, sisters and mom all came over to marvel at my new treasure. We all fawned over it for a minute before we heard Luis's abuela called from kitchen that breakfast was ready. Everyone hurried to the kitchen except for Luis and I. When everyone was out of the room, I turned to Luis.
"Luis, you really shouldn't have. This must have cost you a fortune." I said, shaking my head.
"Maybe. But it was worth it to see the look on your face when you opened it." Luis said, his hand stroking my cheek. "Here. Let me put it on you."
I smiled and turned around in the armchair, letting Luis secure the clasp behind my neck. I touched the pendant reverently. Turning back around, I had to wipe away a few happy tears.
"Merry Christmas, Y/N." Luis said.
"Merry Christmas, Luis." I said back.
We leaned in for a quick kiss that quickly turned long. If it weren't for Luis's abuela shouting in Spanish at us to come join them for breakfast, I happily would have spent the rest of the day snuggled up with Luis. Oh well. There's always New Year's.
