(A/N: This oneshot was requested. I hope you like it! The song in the title is a reference to the song of the same name by Dave Mason. Now, on with the oneshot!)
"I broke up with Linda."
My head shot up from untying my skates to look at Charlie. He was already in his street clothes and was standing with his back pressed against his locker.
"Oh. I'm sorry, Charlie. I know you really liked her." I said, taking my skates off.
"Not as much as I like someone else." Charlie said, coming to sit down next to me on the bench.
His gaze fell on me unyieldingly. I looked at him confused for a minute before realization dawned on me. 'Oh.' I thought.
I was afraid of this. I'd started spending a lot of time with Charlie lately because he had been hanging out with my crush, Adam, a lot. I thought the way for Adam to notice me was for me to be around him a lot and that in turn meant that I was around Charlie a lot.
"Charlie..." I started to say.
"I know I never said anything before, Y/N, but I really like you." Charlie said.
"Char..."
"And I know we're friends but I want us to be more than that." He continued, oblivious to my turmoil.
"Listen, Charlie..."
"I feel like we could be really great together. You know? Y/N and Charlie. Together." Charlie said, making a grab for my hand but I quickly pulled it away.
"Charlie!" I finally shouted.
"What?" He asked.
"Charlie...I'm really sorry but I don't like you like that." I said, quietly this time.
"W-what?" Charlie said. "But I thought..."
"I'm sorry if I lead you on or something but I really think we're better off as friends." I said back.
"Is it something I did or said?" Charlie asked, running his hand through his hair.
"No! No, Charlie, it's not you. Really. You're smart and funny and kind and one of the best guys I've ever met." I said, earnestly.
"Then what Y/N? Is there someone else?"
We sat there in silence for what felt like an eternity. I briefly looked in Adam's direction before looking back at Charlie.
"Sort of." I said, quietly.
Charlie followed my gaze before looking back at me, sighing. "Of course."
"Charlie..."
"No, Y/N. It's okay. I understand." Charlie said.
"I'm so sorry." I said again.
"It's okay. I hope we can still be friends?" He asked, awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck.
"Absolutely! You're not getting rid of me that easily, Conway." I joked, hitting my shoulder against his.
"Good." Charlie said, standing up. "Well, I guess I'll see you around."
"Yeah. See ya." I said with a sad smile.
Charlie walked out of the locker room with one last lingering look at me. I waved to him but he didn't wave back. I should have expected that but it still hurt nonetheless. I guess it's going to take some time for things to go back to normal.
(A/N: Thanks again for the request! I hope you liked it! I feel so bad for Charlie here but the heart wants what it wants! That's all for now! Until next time! Thanks!!)
