(A/N: This oneshot was requested by ishiprichozzy. I hope you like it! The song in the title is a reference to the song of the same name by Mariah Carey. Now, on with the oneshot!)Boxes were strewn about my dorm room. I finished taping another one shut before standing up straight and rolling my sore shoulders. I had spent the last few hours packing as it was the end of my last year at Eden Hall. After four long years, the Ducks and I were finally graduating. It was bittersweet as we would all be spreading out to go to different colleges and other opportunities but we knew we couldn't all stay together forever. Truth be told, there was one person I was going to miss more than the others. My best friend, Adam.
A knock on my door broke me out of my thoughts. Knowing who it was, I called out an 'it's open!' before going to grab another box. In came Adam, coffees in hand. He offered one to me, which I gladly took, before he took a seat at my desk.
"I thought you could use a break." Adam said, spinning slightly in the desk chair.
"Thanks. I definitely could. I feel like I've been packing for, like, ever." I said back, taking a sip of my coffee. "Are you just gonna sit there or are you gonna help me?"
"Yeah, yeah." Adam said, putting his to-go cup down. He reached over to grab some books from the back of my desk but in the process wound up knocking over a framed picture of the two of us, the glass shattering.
"Oh shit!" Adam said, quickly dropping the books. He leaned down and picked up the pieces before picking up the picture itself.
I watched him admire the picture of the two of us, two six year olds with big smiles full of missing teeth before remembering what was so special about that picture. The blood drained from my face as I made a grab for it but it was too late. As Adam turned it over, I saw a small blush spread across his cheeks.
"'Mrs. Y/N Banks'? What's this?" Adam asked.
Mortified, I threw my hands up to cover my face. "Stop..."
"You wrote 'Mrs. Y/N Banks' on the back of this photo?" Adam asked, turning the photo back the other way.
"Yes, okay! It was a long time ago but I kind of...sort of, maybe had a crush on you when we were little." I said, my voice getting smaller with every word. I unceremoniously flopped down on my bed, covering my face with my hands again.
After a minute of silence, I felt the mattress dip as Adam sat down next to me. I peeked between my fingers to find him looking at me with an embarrassed expression. I tilted my head at him and waited for him to speak.
"It's not that bad. I mean, it's normal for kids to have crushes. And we were closer than close so it only makes sense that you'd have on one me." Adam said, logically.
I let out a squeak before throwing a pillow at him. "It's still embarrassing!"
"No it's not. What's embarrassing is having a crush on your best friend when they're in a relationship already." Adam said, scratching the back of his neck.
I sat up quickly. "Wait...are you talking about me and Brett? I dated him in sophomore year. You had a crush on me then?"
"Well, yeah. I kind of did." Adam said, embarrassed expression returning.
A silence settled over us.
"Why didn't you ever say anything?" I asked, quietly, after a minute.
"What was I supposed to say, Y/N? You were in love with the guy. I wasn't going to mess that up for you." Adam said, shrugging.
"I wasn't in love with him..." I trailed off. Truth be told, one of the reasons I had even gone out with Brett was because he reminded me of Adam. "But y-you never said anything! Besides, you were going out with someone new every week! It wasn't like you made your feelings obvious!"
Adam suddenly stood up and started pacing the room. "Well, yeah, Y/N! I was trying to forget about you! Do you think it was easy for me to see you with him?"
"I didn't know!" I exclaimed, standing up also. "And why are we arguing about this? It's not like we like each other now, right?"
Adam stopped pacing and looked at me. "Y-yeah. It's not like we like each other now."
Another silence settled over us, both of us looking at anything but each other. I picked up my now lukewarm coffee and took a long sip. Movement caught my attention out of the corner of my eye as I turned to see Adam making his way through the boxes to the door.
"I gotta go. I-I'll see you later, Y/N." Adam said, walking out the door before I could get a word out.
I stared at the door he just left through for what felt like an eternity. 'Y-yeah. It's not like we like each other now.' The words rang through my head over and over. It was clearly a lie. Did...did Adam still like me? The thought brought a warm feeling throughout my entire body. I hadn't thought about him in that way in a long time. Well, I hadn't allowed myself to think of him like that in a long time. He's been my best friend since we were toddlers but...I want him to be more than that!
"Adam!" I called out, racing for the door. "Wait!"
I wrenched the door open to find Adam still standing there. We looked at each other for a brief moment before we all but lunged at each other, our lips meeting in a passionate kiss. It didn't last nearly as long as I wanted it to but when we both pulled back, we were smiling brightly at each other.
"So what do you say? Are we together?" Adam asked.
"Yep. And it only took us our entire lives." I said with a laugh.
Adam laughed too.
"Well, better late than never."
(A/N: Thanks again to ishiprichozzy for the request! I hope you liked it! This one kind of got away from me but oh well lol That's all for now! Until next time! Thanks!!)
