The morning sun streamed across my face through the partially open curtains, waking me from my slumber. I rolled from one side to the other to face my husband, Guy, who had yet to wake up. I smiled before stretching slightly and getting up from the bed. I quickly checked the bassinet in the corner to make sure Ben was still sleeping, which he thankfully was. I did my morning bathroom routine then quietly crept out of our bedroom and down the hall. I opened the door to our eldest's room and peeked my head in.
"Coop," I quietly yet firmly called out to my still sleeping son. "It's time to get up, bud!"
I watched with a silent laugh as Cooper rolled over onto his side and buried his face into his pillow. I left the door open before moving onto the next room. This was our morning routine. I'd go from room to room and give the kids an initial wake up call before heading downstairs to start breakfast. I stopped in front of our middle child's room and took in the princess themed door. Opening it as quietly as I could, I smiled as I was met with my sleepy eyed toddler, her hair wild from sleep.
"Good morning, Savannah." I said, going into the room and sitting down on the toddler bed.
She ran the back of her hand over her eyes to wipe away the remains of slumber before smiling at me from behind her pacifier. "Hi, mama!"
"Let's go get some breakfast, okay?" I asked, holding out my hand.
She nodded her tiny head before taking my offered hand. We slowly made our way down the stairs before Savannah ran off to the living room. I followed her and turned the TV on for her to the kids network. Knowing that would keep her occupied, I made my way into the kitchen. Grabbing the stuff I needed to make breakfast, I got to work. It didn't take me long as I had everything down to a science after doing it for going on seven years now.
I sighed happily. 'Seven years...' I thought to myself. It seemed like just yesterday I had met Guy nearly 12 years ago. I had been studying for the SATs in the quad at Eden Hall when he'd just fallen into my lap - literally. He and his friends had been roller skating by when I made eye contact with Guy. He'd been so flustered that he'd hit a crack in the cement and skated into my chair before falling into my lap.
I laughed at the memory as I finished cooking. We'd been just about inseparable since that day. We married straight out of high school and never looked back. Soon after we finished college, we were blessed with our first born, Cooper. Five years later, Savannah joined our growing family. And just a few months ago, Ben was born to complete our family of five. We were content.
Just as I finished plating the food, I heard small footsteps coming down the stairs. I looked up and smiled as a half asleep Cooper came downstairs and plopped into his usual chair. I grabbed his plate and set it down in front of him, placing a quick kiss to the crown of his head. Heavier footsteps caught my attention as I turned to see my husband making his way down the stairs, the baby securely in his arms.
"Good morning." I said, going up to Guy and giving him a kiss. A little hand reached up and patted my cheek, causing us to break the kiss with a shared chuckle. "And good morning to you, Benny!"
The baby gurgled at me before returning his hand to fisting itself into Guy's shirt. I placed a kiss on his head before going back to the counter to get Guy's plate. After setting it down, I took Ben from Guy and called for Savannah to come and eat. It took her a minute but she finally tore herself away from whatever kids show she was watching and came waddling to the table.
As we ate our breakfast, I couldn't help but smile as I looked around the table at my family. I caught Guy's eye between bites and we shared a brief moment before Cooper accidentally knocked over his apple juice and Savannah started crying because a drop of it got on her breakfast, Benny crying because his sister was crying. Shaking his head good naturedly, Guy got up to get some paper towels while I gathered both of my littler ones into my arms, Cooper just went back to eating like nothing was happening. It was never a dull moment in the Germaine house.
