Ok I have this idea! It's going to come in multiple parts, but like I'm ~vibing~ in my current writing headspace so I hope you guys enjoy! Xx
Sirius had convinced himself that Regulus wasn't capable of love due to the trauma their parents had inflicted on him, he had convinced himself that this was why Regulus did not love him. Sirius however did not realize, until this moment when he watched Regulus look at James with nothing but adoration yet silence, that Regulus had never been incapable of falling in love he had simply been robbed of the right to be.
Sirius and Regulus' eyes locked and Sirius watched at Regulus quickly diverted his gaze back into his book, crossing his arm over his body and shaking any hint of affection towards James away. Sirius knew he was going to regret this but he also knew James liked his brother, despite the fact he tried to hide it from Sirius miserably.
Sirius looked between James and Regulus and in that moment decided that if anyone was going to prove to Regulus that love could be real, it was going to be him, after all Sirius had managed to fall in love.
Sirius stood up and started making his way over to Slytherin table. Regulus and Sirius had a complicated relationship, Regulus was undoubtedly mad at Sirius for leaving him but at the same time understood why he left. Sirius didn't regret leaving, he just regretted not taking Regulus with him.
Sirius stood in front of Regulus, he didn't sit down at their table, he just stood there awkwardly waiting for Regulus to acknowledge him. Regulus finally looked up when Barty made a snide comment at Sirius who just turned and poked his tongue out, he wasn't in the right headspace to think of something witty to say back.
"Can I help you Sirius?"
"Can I talk to you?" Sirius looked at Regulus' friends who were eyeing him down, "privately"
"Have our parents died?"
"Not to my knowledge"
"Then I'm not interested"
"It's to do with someone else you might be interested in though"
Regulus raised his eyebrows then folded his book shut, he placed it in his bag then stood up proceeding to leave the great hall. Sirius looked at him confused when Regulus stopped and turned his head,
"Coming?"
Sirius caught up to him and the two kept walking, they took left and right turns, walked up and down stairs, they just kept going until they reached a random part of the castle. They looked up to see a large oil painting, it was of a grand estate with a range of colours and textures covering the canvas.
"I suppose once the house could've looked like that"
"The house never looked like that" Regulus sat on the floor underneath the painting and waited for Sirius to join him.
Regulus sat cross legged whilst Sirius sat with his knee up, Regulus' jumper covered his body while Sirius had his sleeves rolled, Regulus' hands were decorated with silver jewelry while Sirius wore a gold necklace, then their ties, both loosely placed around their necks with the colours never having been more conflicting.
"So what did you want to talk about?"
"You, me, our parents... and James"
Regulus froze, "that doesn't sound like anything worth my time" Regulus rolled his eyes and started to stand up.
"James could be worth your time" Sirius shrugged as Regulus stopped himself from moving. Sirius took his hand and brought him back down to the ground next to him, "why have you never told him?"
