The Great Hall had never looked, well, so great. There were decorations everywhere you looked and the room was flooded in students and staff wearing incredible outfits that showed off their house pride.
James stood talking within his large group of friends, being cautious not to spill anything on his suit or else he owed Lily 10 galleons, when he noticed someone standing gracefully on the other side of the room.
Regulus stood amongst his friends, a glass in hand, elegantly poised as the Great Hall continued to fill up with their countless new guests. Regulus listened to Barty's voice in the background but his eyes were fixed on James.
James and Regulus' relationship was interesting to say the least. In the beginning, Regulus despised James because in his mind James had taken his brother from him. Likewise, James had a distaste for Regulus, not in a malicious sense, but in a way that he couldn't understand Regulus' choices and decisions. Now though, the two always ended up somehow intertwined in each others lives, whether that was in class, quidditch or just in their day to day lives.
Music began playing and the students turned as Dumbledore announced the first dance which everyone was to partake in with their partner, it was the only compulsory dance they had to do since it was a sign of respect to the other schools who had joined them.
Marlene and Dorcas spotted each other and took to the center of the floor, placing their arms around the other's waist as the slow music began to sway them from side to side. Sirius took Remus' hand and gracefully pulled him to the dance floor, the two men leaning their foreheads together with a smile.
Regulus began to smile as he watched Evan roll his eyes, Barty dragging him over near Dorcas to dance. His smile grew more when a very nervous Xeno approached Pandora, politely asking if she wished to dance with him to which she gave an enthusiastic yes.
James watched as Mary took Lily's hand, gently leading her away, James then realised his circle was getting smaller and smaller by the minute and when he turned to find Peter he saw a shorter brunette who Peter had befriended, bringing him over. James was by himself.
Regulus smiled until he realized his friends were gone, he was left standing alone near the Slytherin table with an empty glass in his hand. Regulus went to turn to James when he noticed another girl talking to him, gesturing to where everyone else was dancing. Regulus placed his glass down and swiftly left before any of the teachers could realize he was gone.
James politely smiled at the Gryffindor in front of him, she seemed like a lovely person but he wasn't interested and turned to find Regulus, he couldn't see anyone till out of the corner of his eye he caught a glimpse of a black suit walk out the door, the green interior velvet lighting up for moment just long enough that James could recognize him.
"That's very kind of you, I'm sorry though, I have to leave. I hope you find someone nice to dance with with" James tried to be as kind as possible and left the hall quietly, following down the hall where he had last seen the black and green colour scheme.
James searched the halls, almost giving up as his heartbeat began to quicken. James stood in the arches that surrounded the courtyard, he looked up at the sky and watched as the clouds parted, giving way to a beautiful array of starlight. James continued to admire the night sky when he heard a set of footprints approaching him, he recognized the pattern though and kept his head still looking up.
