Eda woke up early in the morning and quickly jumped out of her bed to brush her teeth. The moment she was dressed she ran to the room across hers and knocked on the door.

"Serkan, are you awake?!" She called when no one answered. "Serkan?"

Eda turned from the door, disappointed that she didn't find him in his room again. He was an early riser, so probably he was already out swimming, hiking, or walking around the town.

Eda left the hotel and went to the restaurant for breakfast, looking around in the hope of spotting Serkan, but he was nowhere to be found. The main event was planned for early afternoon, and the rest of the day was free. They had plane tickets booked for tomorrow morning, so Eda had a lot of time to find Serkan and talk to him, only if he would be in her sight range.

Eda went to the beach several times, climbed the hill with the observatory tower twice, and walked around the town, but still with no success. She went to her room to change, and when she spotted their coach sitting by one of the tables, she decided to approach him.

"Where is Serkan? It's a closing ceremony."

"He left yesterday afternoon." The man answered over his phone and shrugged.

Eda looked at him with shock. "Why?"

"He said he was sick and took a plane."

"Plane? From here?" Her stomach turned at what that could mean, and her coach's next words only confirmed her fears.

"I don't know. He came to me to borrow the phone and called his brother. A big, expensive SUV drove for him, and he left. Probably with a private jet."

"But he can't use a private jet."

"Why?"

"Never mind." Eda shook her head and quickly turned toward the hotel. She needed to change her flight to Portugal for today as soon as possible.

Late evening Eda got out of the cab parked under Serkan's house and saw the lights inside off. She walked to the porch and rang the bell. When again no one answered, she started banging on the door, trying not to think what the silence meant.

"Eda, Serkan left."

Eda turned around to see Piril standing on the pavement, wrapped in a sweater and looking at her with a sad expression in her eyes.

"What do you mean left?"

"He went to the Holding."

Eda felt a pang in her heart. "But he never wanted work in the Holding. He never wanted that life."

"I don't know what happened, but he came back, packed his things, and said that this competition was an eye opener and he can't live like this. Something happened there?" Piril was looking at her intently.

"No, I have no idea. He was acting normal and a day before the closing ceremony he disappeared."

"I don't know, Eda, but he looked crushed. I never saw him like this before," Piril said, but she didn't tell her friend the whole truth. She saw her brother in similar state before, but only once. After his graduation party, when he packed his backpack and disappeared without a word for three months, leaving the message that he didn't want to be found.

Eda nodded and moved from Serkan's porch. She went to her flat and sat on the stairs in front of the main door. When she was sure Piril couldn't see her, she hid her face between her knees and broke down in tears.
