The Invite - Matt Donovan

Matt and I sat in our favorite booth at the Mystic Grill, our weekly lunch date, a cherished tradition. Something our moms had started us on back when we were toddlers and no matter what was going on in our lives, we always managed to find the time in our schedules for these lunches.

As we chatted and laughed, I couldn't help but notice the glances we were getting from across the restaurant. Caroline Forbes, one of our classmates and an ex-friend of mine, sat with her friends at a nearby table, her disapproving eyes fixed on me. She had never forgiven me for leading Katherine Pierce back into town, a decision that had ultimately led to her being turned into a vampire. Which to her defense I did earn. It wasn't like I had been compelled, I just thought it was Elena. Fatal mistake on my part.

Matt must have sensed my discomfort because he leaned in and whispered, "Don't pay her any mind, YNN. She's just bitter."

I forced a smile and a nod, grateful for Matt's unwavering support throughout this battle with the Forbes girl over the past year. "You're right."

Just as we were about to dive back into our conversation, Caroline approached our table, an insincere smile plastered on her face. "Hey, Matt! I was just wondering if you'd like to come to my party tonight. It's going to be a blast."

Matt looked torn for a moment, glancing at me before turning back to Caroline. "Well, I appreciate the invite, Caroline, but I usually spend my Saturday nights with YN. I'll go if she does."

Caroline's smile faltered for a split second before she recovered. "Oh, YN isn't invited. It's a small gathering, you know?" The tall tale coming out of the blonde-headed girl's pouty red stained lips made my eyes roll involuntarily.

When I looked back over to Matt, I could see the conflict in his blue eyes, and I didn't want him to miss out on having a good time just because of Caroline's pettiness towards me. It's unfair to him. "Matt, you should go. I don't mind. I can find something to do tonight."

He hesitated but then nodded. "Alright, YNN. If you're sure."

"Dude, don't question me." I said with a slight giggle and gave him an encouraging smile. "I'm sure. Have fun, and don't worry about me."

As Matt left with Caroline, I couldn't help but feel a pang of loneliness. But I knew that I had made the right decision. Matt deserved to enjoy himself without feeling torn between his loyalty to me and his desire to have a good time.

Later that evening, as I found myself engrossed in a book at home, my phone buzzed with a text from Matt. It read, "Thanks, YNN. I owe you one." I smiled as I looked down at my phone. It was the small moments like these that assured me that Matt and I have a friendship that could never be wavered.
