If Elijah Mikaelson was anything, he was an honest man who kept his word. He was always someone I could count on being there when I needed him to be. No matter where he was, or what he was doing, he would drop everything when I called. It was something I try not to do often because he does have a life away from me. But today was not one of those days.
After I had gotten home, I climbed out onto the roof, a place where Stefan and Damon knew not to bug me when I was there, and sat down off to the side of my window. I stared off into the trees for a moment before pulling out my phone and calling my brother. Just like every other time, I would call, Lijah picked up on the second ring.
"What do I owe the pleasure, my dear sister?" He questioned, and I could practically hear the smile on his face.
"Are you doing anything important?" I questioned as I quickly looked at my feet, and then back up to the tree line. "I can call back later if you are."
"Don't be ridiculous, (Y/N/N). Nothing is more important than you in my eyes and you know that." He responded. "What's wrong?" Elijah's voice was now concerned. When I didn't speak for a moment, he asked, "Do you need me to come to you?"
"If you're not busy. It's been a rough few days, and Niklaus is not helping with the prior situation my mental health was already in." I say softly into my phone.
"Are you alone?" My older brother asked.
"In the house?" No. Stefan and Damon are both here. Though, I'm sure the oldest is about to make his leave. But on the roof? Yes. They know not to bother me when I'm out here. If they have learned anything about me in the time I have stayed here, it would be that." I respond with a sad giggle.
"I will be there." Elijah said and waited for me to respond with a simple okay before he hung up the phone.
As I waited for my brother, I watched as Damon left the boarding house, giving me a small smile before getting into his car. It was a small gesture we had begun to do a long time ago that meant the other was going to be okay. It wasn't much but it was enough to calm me down just slightly. Right after he left, Ric and Elena arrived to speak to Stefan. The Gilbert girl walked in without noticing me but the Saltzman man did and mouthed 'Are you okay?' I just shook my head, mouthing back 'Not really.'
Alaric waited for Elena to close the door then looked back up at me. "Is he on his way?" He asked.
I nodded at him. "I'll be fine, Ric. Don't worry about me."
"As your friend. It's written in the job description." He said with a smile. Which in turn made me let out a small giggle.
"Thank you for that." I say.
"You're welcome. You know where to find me." He said with a small smile that I returned and made his way inside.
It was only a few minutes later that I heard my brother's voice come from my window. "You know, I never quite understood when we were younger why you insisted on finding the tallest perch in the village when you were upset." Elijah said as he made his way onto the roof and sat down next to me. "But after father started sending me to calm you and help you down, I started to understand. When you think no one can reach you, you have the space and time to yourself to think about all the things going on around you. It's peaceful."
"That it is." I said softly with a nod.
Elijah wrapped an arm around me and pulled me to his side. "What's wrong, (Y/N/N)? Talk to me."
I sighed and looked up at him. "Do you ever miss home?"
"All the time." My brother stated. "Do you?"
Giving him a small nod, I said, "I miss it when we were all happy and carefree. I miss when father would put me on his shoulders so I could pick the fruit from the branches higher up on the trees too unstable for me to climb. The look on Beks' face when I made the candles or fireplace get light with just my thoughts. I miss home, Lijah."
My older brother placed a kiss on the top of my head. "We all do in our own way." He said as he held me closer. "What brought this on?"
"Katherine told Damon and Jeremy about our father. About how he could kill Niklaus. Not that I'm truly worried about that. Nik seems to always get away. I'm pretty sure they'll wake him. Again, not worried about that either. I never ran from father. But I am worried about what if I do see him what will happen. Will he hold me close like he always did or will he treat me like Klaus because I helped Bonnie's mom entomb him? It makes me miss when we never had to worry about that kind of thing. Made me miss home." I confessed as I played with the necklace around my neck that our father had given me when I was very young.
"Well if you asked me I would tell you that father would never hurt his favorite child in any way. No matter what she did before. But what of Niklaus not being any help?" Elijah questioned.
"Lijah, when has Nik been any help on my mental health as of late?" I asked with a sigh. "With him wanting to create this massive hybrid army, chasing around Elena, and causing me to have a bad migraine every time I talk to him. I'm beginning to think we are losing our brother to the hybrid and it's killing me more than missing home does."
"Don't worry about Niklaus, (Y/N/N). He will always just do his own thing. Don't change from the way we used to be and you will see that our brother is still there. He's just hiding."
"Lijah, he daggered you and threw you into a casket to forget about till I found you, Kol, and Finn and released you myself. You are supposed to be the closest one to him. Our Niklaus wouldn't that just because we crossed him. He would get mad, sure, maybe ignore us for some time but then get over it. This Nik is not our brother and it scares me." I said looking from him back into the trees. "Just another reason I miss home."
Elijah kissed the top of my head once more. "We will get through it, (Y/N/N). We always do." Just then Stefan came outside and looked up at us.
"There's food down here whenever you're ready, (Y/N)." I sent him a smile and a nod. Then he looked over to my brother. "You too, Elijah. If you care to join."
"I think I will. Thank you, Stefan. The offer is greatly appreciated." My brother smiled at the youngest Salvatore brother before the boy disappeared back inside the house.
All my friends, thankfully, got along with Elijah now that they know he's not such a bad guy or they figured out that he was the only one that I wouldn't rip a new one in when I was upset. Either way, they enjoyed his company more than they want him dead.
"Come now. Let's go eat dinner." Elijah said as he stood from his spot.
I took a moment before I stood as well and questioned, "Lijah? If you're not busy with anything else, could you stay with me tonight? I don't want to be alone right now and with everything I told you, you're the closest thing I can get to home."
My brother took my hand, stopping me from pulling on the frayed strings of my sweater, and smiled. "When it comes to you, I'm never busy. I'll stay however long you need me to do so." He said with a caring smile and we made our way inside.
When we got downstairs, Damon was standing at the bottom of the stairs waiting on us. I looked at him very confused. "When did you get home?" I questioned.
"I pulled in as you two were coming off the roof. The oldest Salvatore said as he took a hold of my hand that Elijah's hand just let go of. "Is everything okay?"
I looked from my boyfriend to my brother and back, giving a slight nod. "Not completely at this moment but better than it was before. Lijah is staying for a few days depending on how I'm feeling if that's fine with you and Stefan."
"Always. Stay however long you would like, brother." Damon said with a smile. "Now, it's time to eat."
