She was distant here lately with everyone. (Y/N) would hide in her room all day. The girl barely came out for food, and whenever she did, you couldn't get her to talk. For as long as we've known her, we have never seen her like this before. (Y/N/N) was normally the outgoing person. Told you everything you needed to know just by looking at her face. To see her so closed off like this gave Stefan and me a very unsettling feeling.

Her sister couldn't even get her to open up and Caroline is very good at talking your head off till she gets the answer she wanted. But (Y/N) wasn't letting anyone in. Stefan had to remind me that we didn't want her to be pissed off and closed off when I threatened to go to the Forbes home and kick down her bedroom door to get answers. The only one who could get any words at all out of her was her mother and Ric. The only thing Ric was able to pull from her was questions and answers about the homework he had given out, and Liz said that it wasn't her place to tell us what her child doesn't want us to know. Which was no help.

"I'm starting to worry about her though." Liz said as we stood in her office. "She hasn't acted this way in a long time."

"(Y/N)'s acted like this before?" I asked.

She nodded. "It's been a long time. It's one of the reasons she's never going to see Bill after he moved out of town."

I gave her a confused look. "Did he hurt her?"

Liz immediately shook her head. "Bill would never hurt his baby girl, but his boyfriend on the other hand..." she trailed. "He always liked Caroline more. Showered her with gifts and shopping trips. It took months to get her to open up about any of it. If Bill and Caroline weren't around, he would hit her and call her names. Told her if she told her dad that she was as good as gone."

Crossing my arms over my chest, I asked "Do you think that's what she's going through? Something like that again?"

She shrugged. "To be honest it's always been hard to get it out of her. If she is, I can tell you where to start looking for answers. I would say school, but you already know that she's been homeschooled for years."

"I never asked you why you only pulled her out of school and not Caroline." I noted.

"She didn't want to go to school anymore and hide the bruises that Todd had caused during her time with him. I took her out of public school the next morning, and that afternoon I told Bill he had better do something before I did." She explained that took a seat at her desk. "The next week he got rid of his apartment and hitched it out of town with Todd. If he wants to see her, he calls her and he alone meets her somewhere between here and there."

"And after all that was settled?"

"Once I had left town and (Y/N) was well settled into homeschool things seemed to get back to normal pretty quickly. With some hiccups, of course." Liz folded her hands together and laid them on the desk in front of her.

I sat down in a chair in front of her desk. "The nightmares?" She nodded. Although I didn't show it my blood was boiling at the thought of anyone hurting my girlfriend. If someone was doing it now they would surely pay. (Y/N) was the kindest girl you could ever meet and didn't deserve to have a dark part of her history, repeat itself. "I promise that Stefan and I will do whatever it takes to get her back to normal."

The sheriff nodded. "Look if I know my daughter like I think I do then she's not gonna open up so quickly. But then again, I am her mother and not a vampire with the ability to look someone in the eyes and get them to do whatever they want."

I raised my eyebrows. Then I thought about it for a moment and said, "I have never compelled (Y/N), Liz. Neither has Stefan. We aren't about to start now."
