He was busy going through the millions of files that were stacked on his desk of paperwork that had to be finished. Mom had asked him to finish them the best he could while we went to have lunch with Caroline. Matt looked flush with all the work still ahead of him. According to Tiffany working the front desk at the precinct, he hasn't even taken time to eat.
When Tiff had called me to come get my stubborn fiancé to eat, mom told me that she would put money on the fact that Officer Cooke had put his files on top of Matt's. Well, I knew Officer Strout wouldn't mind helping Matt, though he had a pile of files of his own, Cooke wasn't a paperwork kind of guy and we just put his files back on Matt's desk for him to do. I didn't like him, but he got his field job done, so I never complain for mom's sake.
So here I am bringing lunch to my man, knowing I could have just sent it back with my mother. But I also brought Brian something too because I knew he was working just as hard as Matt was. Brian take me as I walked away after giving him his food to take Matt his.
When I walked in, I saw that Tripp was sitting at his desk with nothing in front of him like always. He noticed me instantly, and quickly sat up.
"(Y/N)? What are you doing here? Your mom left two hours ago to meet your sister for lunch." he told me like I didn't already know.
In the back of my mind, I am rolling my eyes at him. "I know. I just got back from having lunch with them. But no in my fiancé the way I do I know he hasn't eaten anything since this morning because he takes pride in his work even the boring paperwork."
"As do I." he says and then leans back in his desk chair.
"Oh do you?" I question as I look over his desk. "Then where is your stack of files? Strout seems to have enough to keep him busy for at least two days and Matt probably has more." Cooke looks at his desk for a moment, and then back up at me ready to say something, but I speak again before he can. "I know they were files on your desk with my mother left out at noon because I placed them there. I also know how many there were and how long it takes to write out and file a single one into records. You carelessly forget I have been the sheriff's daughter, all my life and there hasn't been a lie or excuse I haven't heard come from an Officer that has worked under my mother. I have worked in this precinct since I graduated high school. I know what goes on and who does and doesn't do what. So before you give me some round-the-block answer, you better think before you speak. I might be young, but I am far from clueless."
My words dumbfounded him. It's no secret around the department that I am known to treat the ones who deserve it with respect, and the ones who don't with an evident, but still kind rudeness. It's known that I will often put officers in their place before my mother does and I had put off doing it to Cooke but I couldn't take it any longer.
"Ms. Forbes, you are not allowed to speak to me like that." he says, in a very authoritative tone.
"Are you my father?" I ask.
"Well, no."
"And seeing as you're not a woman being, my mother is out of the question. You're also not the man that plays this ring on my finger seven months ago."
"Again, no, I'm not." he says and crosses his arms. "But you.."
I cut him off once again. "So if you are not the one who birthed me, the one who helped her conceive me, or the one I graciously and willingly sleep next to you every night, you are not allowed to determine, or tell me who I can, and cannot speak to you in a certain way. Cooke, you are not my superior, if anything, I'm yours. Just because I do not wear a badge or sign your checks doesn't mean I hold any lower standard than you do. Did you get that? Just like I had told the ones that have come before you, you can take this up with the sheriff if you so please but all my mother will tell you is that you should have been doing your job in the first place and I wouldn't talk down to a man twice my age." I say, with a venom-filled smile. "Now if you excuse me, I'm going to give a hard-working man, his lunch, and I suggest you find those files have mysteriously run off before it is noticed by my mother when she comes back from the rest of her lovely lunch break. Which I happen to know is in like five minutes."
