All the preparation in the world couldn't have prepared me for the day I was walking around the old cemetery grounds and stumbled upon a headstone with her name on it. I knew she wasn't there, but it still hit me hard. Sitting there next to my father's grave was a stone reading YN Salvatore. Aged 16. Beloved daughter, sister, and friend.
I haven't seen my little sister in over a hundred years. YN couldn't take the damnation that had become of our home and knowing our father was a part of it all just threw her off the edge one day. The day before the vampire round-up, the youngest of us walked away from Mystic Falls and never returned.
YNN had been curious about the vampires' lifestyle after finding out that they walked amongst us. She wanted to know why everyone stamped them as the villains of their story. The day she ran away, YN had a friend turn her after much convincing. No one knew about him, nor had their suspicions. They had come up with a plan to keep everyone from looking for her. The day after we had turned, Thomas came back to The Falls and told George Lockwood of the death of my sister but informed him that her body had been too mutilated to bring home to our father.
At the time neither I nor Damon knew of this plan, and I remember quite well the tears streaming down my face as I overheard George tell Father of what he was told. He had believed he had just lost all of his children and I believed I had lost my only sister. That was the night everything changed. The town had this stone erected in her honor even though there wasn't a body to be placed with it.
For over ten years, Damon and I thought that YNN was dead. However, in the late days of autumn in 1877, I learned that the information I had heard was only partly true.
------ Flashback to 1877 ------
I was walking in the lovely city of Paris with Lexi, she suddenly stopped with a smile on her face as she looked off into the distance. "Lex, what is it?" I questioned after running into her, not knowing she had stopped.
Lexi turned to me and said, "I have something to show you, Stefan." she then turned back toward the crowd of people in front of us, still smiling. "Do you trust me?"
I gave her a simple nod. "More than anyone else I am to know."
"Then come with me." The blonde-haired girl commanded in a more cheerful than normal tone.
As we weaved through the hundreds of people that stood in the field, I wondered where Alexia could have possibly been taking me. Whatever it was she saw wanting to show me must have been exciting enough for her to be this eager because he was leaving me in her tracks. It only took a few more minutes of following her for me to see it. Standing amongst the crowd, stood a young girl with YHC hair, laughing with her small group of friends. Now, I knew that there were quite a few good many of people that looked like her. I had mistaken a few for her before. But I could never mistake the overcoat that Damon had commissioned for our sister with her initials embroidered on the end of the sleeve.
I stopped short and grabbed onto Lexi's hand for confirmation that it all was real. "Is that...?"
The blonde girl nodded and the smile on her face told me all that I truly needed to know. "She's been waiting a long time to see you again."
"Does she know we're here?" I questioned.
Lexi's smile only grew more to my question. "She's the one that invited us." My face turned into that of disbelief. "Go, Stefan. She's waiting on you."
I let go of her hand and mindlessly walked towards my younger sister who I thought to be long dead by now. The sound of her laughing was like music to my ears. It had been almost thirteen years since I heard it last, and it was as if it hadn't changed a bit. I still couldn't believe that she was right in front of me, so I stopped just short of reaching her. "YN?" I asked, my voice not even considered a whisper with how soft I made it. But she heard me, nonetheless.
