Deserved This

The sun dipped low beyond the horizon as I and my classmates bid a bittersweet farewell to the halls of Mystic Falls High School. The air was filled with a sense of accomplishment and promises of new beginnings. Amidst the laughter and cheers, I found myself standing beside my best friend, YN YLN. The two of us had grown quite close over the years after having to deal with all of the supernatural related crap that has come our way.

"So, are you going to tell me where we're going yet?" she questioned, her eyes sparkling with curiosity as I led towards my car.

I had invited her to go with me on my senior trip, well our senior trip now, and as soon as I got the go ahead, I started secretly planning. Never once did I give her anything to go on where we were going. All I had ever told her was to make sure she packed a bathing suit. Nothing more, nothing less. That's all she was getting.

"Nope." I replied with a mischievous look in my eyes. "That would ruin the surprise." YNN rolled her eyes, a smirk played on her lips as she reluctantly climbed into the passenger seat.

The engine roared to life, and we pulled out of the school parking lot, heading straight for the open road and leaving old Mystic Falls behind us. The 7-hour drive was filled with playful banter, reminiscing about the many memories we made throughout our high school experience, and of course YNN tried multiple times to pry the secret location out of me. She didn't get very much out of that though.

As the hours passed, the landscapes around us kept changing the further south we ventured. I noticed when YN reclined her seat just slightly enough to relax but yet still be able to look out of the windshield. I could tell that she was still trying to rack her brain to figure out where we were going. To me, it was quite amusing. The anticipation was gnawing at her, but I knew she was enjoying the thrill of the unknown.

Finally, as the city lights glimmered around as in the wee hours of the morning, I turned to her with that all too mischievous smile on my face. "Welcome to Savannah, sweetheart."

Her YEC eyes widened in both surprise and delight as she stared out the window. Savannah had always been a dream destination for the YHC haired girl, with its historic charm and southern allure capturing her overactive imagination. As she turned to face me, her face lit up with so much joy, I thought she might just burst. "How'd you know?"

I chuckled at her question, a glint of satisfaction in my eye. "You can't say I don't pay attention now." I said playfully. "Figured you would enjoy it."

We spent the next few days exploring the cobblestone streets, historic squares, and the enchanting riverfront. YN rambled off any interesting fact she could think of as we journeyed through the city. She would often cut herself off when she found herself rambling. I found it cute and would edge her to go on. From our haunting walk-through Bonaventure Cemetery to the vibrant energy flowing through Forsyth Park as we sat enjoying pastries we got at a small café down the street. Every moment that we spent there was a cherished memory I would hold on to forever.

On our last night in Savannah, under the moon-lit sky, we found ourselves sitting on the rooftop of our hotel, the city sprawled out before us.

"Thanks, Ty," YN whispered, her eyes reflecting the twinkling lights as her head laid upon my shoulders. "Best senior trip I could have ever asked for."

I smiled and wrapped my arm around her shoulders. "It's no problem, YNN. We made it through that trainwreck that we called 'high school'. We deserved this."
