"Nick, please," mum almost cried.
"Get out and never come back. Come here again, and I will get you arrested." Dad threatened.
I looked down as a tear rolled down my eyes but I quickly wiped it off.
"There is a lot of money in that envelope. Take it and go back to wherever you came from." He said, walking back into the house.
Mum and I stood there, watching him enter the house.
This is not what I expected.
I expected his open arms and a bright smile.
I expected a word of appreciation for being smart and passing the exam for the scholarship.
I expected him to tell me how proud he his of me. How sorry he is for missing seventeen years of my life.
I expected a lot today.
Certainly not....this.
"Let's go, baby." Mum said, taking my hand as we walked towards the gate.
My mind pondered around everything. Aren't they married?
He sounded as if they are not.
Does that makes me an illigetimate child?
My heart tightened at the possiblity of my thoughts.
We walked out of the gate. Mum turned her gaze back to the mansion as the gate closed by itself. She looked down at the envelope in her hand.
I took in her unhappy and disappointed face.
I thought about what is next for us?
Are we going back to our small town?
I would love to. I never wanted to come here in the first place.
But what about school? What about the scholarship?
Mum looked at me. I stared her. She gave me an unpleasant smile as she drew me closer to her and wrapped her hands around me.
"I am so sorry, baby. I am sorry you had to experience that." She said, resting her head on mine.
"I am so sorry." She said.
"But, I thought you both were married." I said.
She let out a breathless scoff, looking down.
I looked at her. She is very sad. The tears on her eyes are aching my heart. My tears are coming too.
"I am sorry, baby. I couldn't tell you. You were so young to understand. I didn't want you to feel different from other kids."
I looked down, taking in what she just said.
"Please understand, baby. Don't hate me."
I looked at her, shaking my head. "I don't hate you. I will never hate you. I love you."
She looked at me with emotions.
"Oh sweetie ," She almost cried as she wrapped me in a hug. I wrapped my hands around her. She kissed my hair, sniffling as she made me look at her.
"Look, sweetie, I am here for you, okay?"
I nodded.
"Don't think too much about what happened back in there. Everything is going to be alright." She assured me.
