“MAMA, I'M IN LOVE WITH A CRIMINAL”

"And... done. Next up, Richard Ramirez's documentary," I announced to myself as I grabbed the remote. I was about to search for some true crime documentaries about him when I glanced at my half-full bowl of popcorn. I grunted as I stood up, not wanting to miss any second of another documentary.

It's been 3 years since I started watching serial killer documentaries. I was a horror fan first. But the thrill of fake scenarios bored me over time, so I had to find something more exciting. And that's when I discovered real people who kill. Real serial killers. Real psychopaths. That excited me more because I knew they existed. And I knew that they were real.

As I was grabbing more popcorn from the kitchen, I heard my TV blasting some news. Wtf?

Woah. Tama ba ang rinig ko?

I brought my half-filled bowl of popcorn back to the living room to watch the TV. And the woman's face... she looks like someone I could meet while walking on the same roads I walk on.

"...Kung mayroon kayong kahit anong impormasyon ukol dito, maaaring tawagan ang numerong nakapaskil sa inyong mga telebisyon. Ngayon, balitang showbiz na muna tayo..." I couldn't remember what else I was supposed to do after hearing that news. Bakit ngayon ko lang 'to nalaman?

----

I became obsessed with him... my unnamed serial killer. I read every single article about him, every single theory of who he might be, and waited every day for the news just to see him strike again. He became my new hobby.

Of course, I don't know anything about him, but I've watched too many true crime documentaries, and I can tell he's a he.

----

Habang naglalakad papasok sa work, may nakabangga sa aking lalaki. He was on a jog and was busy looking at his watch, kaya siguro hindi ako napansin. At sakto pa talagang may dala akong kape, dahilan para matapon itong lahat sa puti kong uniform. Great. Fucking great.

"Sorry, miss. I didn't mean to."

"It's fine. Magpapalit nalang ako." Ayaw kong ipakitang inis na inis na ako sa nangyari, lalo pa't late na rin ako, dahil ayaw ko nang gumawa ng gulo.

"Uhm, ihahatid nalang kita." He looks fine af. But argh, erase that, Saffy! Galit ka, remember?

"No, thanks. I don't wanna jog with you."

He smiled awkwardly. "I actually have my car over there. Kakasimula ko lang kasi mag-jog."

"Ayos lang talaga—"

"I insist."

"Fine."

And that's how I met Kay.

The next day, I was shocked to find out that he moved into the house next to mine. Sabi niya, last week pa raw niya binili yung house and was really planning to move that day. What a coincidence.

The week after that, another news caught my attention. My serial killer struck again.

----

A month passed, and Kay and I grew closer. We started hanging out after work, having coffee together, and even watching true crime documentaries. Somehow, he seemed really interested in them, just like me. Our conversations would often drift toward the psychology of killers, the thrill they must feel, and how they managed to... evade the police for so long.
