3 Years Later

I paced back and forth in the living room, patiently waiting. Excitement and nerves made its way into my stomach and chest. Charles was on his way from the factory at Maranello after working on some preseason meetings and filming for media.

"Mama," Lana hollered for me down the hall in her room, which brought me out of my thoughts and back to the present.

"Coming," I called to her and started my way down the hallway to her room.

We had moved to the outskirts of Monte Carlo prior to adopting Lana. Our apartment was nice and it had served its purpose well for the years that Charles and I had lived in it. But we wanted something bigger, something we could grow into.

Charles and I had adopted Lana two years ago, and it's been the most joyful two years of our lives. At first we weren't sure if she even wanted to be part of our family. So we had arranged a lunch date with her through her foster mom. When Charles and I asked her if she wanted to be part of our family, she immediately jumped up and down with excitement, screaming "Yes! Yes! Yes!" to the top of her lungs at the restaurant.

When I entered Lana's room, she was at her desk, coloring. Lana was only seven, but she acted like a teenager already. I could only imaging all of the headaches that she will cause Charles when she starts dating- if he even allows her to date at all. Lana's blonde hair blocked her face as she looked down, examining her paper.

"Do you think Daddy will like it?" She held up her artwork that she had been working on all afternoon.

Charles and I had never told Lana that she needed to call us Mom and Dad. We wanted her to call us whatever felt natural to her. She called us by our first names for the first couple of months, until one day she started calling us Mommy and Daddy.

The first time she ever called me Mommy, my heart exploded with nothing but happiness. Being her mom has been one of the best experiences of my life, and I would never take it for granted.

"I think..." I tapped my chin, pretending to judge her hard work and taking an extra long time deciding.

Lana squinted her eyes at me, already knowing that I was being dramatic. And Charles still wonders where Lana gets her spark from.

"I think Daddy's gonna love it," I smiled at her.

Her smile widened, showcasing her missing front tooth that she lost a couple weeks ago.

"Good," she replied. "Because I made one for Lan Lan, Uncle Max, Uncle Carlos, and Uncle Pierre too."

I started laughing. If there was anything Lana loved, it was her uncles. She had all of them wrapped around her fingers quickly when we brought her home from the US after the adoption was official.

"I know they'll love them," I told her.

My mind couldn't help but start to wander again to the previous thoughts. But Lana brought me back.

"Wanna help me practice my Spanish while we wait for Dad to get home?" She asked.

I nodded. "Sure."
