Nabi was pacing back and forth in her apartment, her nerves getting the better of her. The masquerade ball was just a few hours away, and she couldn't stop thinking about the dance she had to perform. The gown Sunoo had given her hung elegantly in the corner, waiting to be worn, but all she could focus on was her anxiety about the dance.
She had practiced the steps countless times, but the thought of performing in front of so many people made her stomach twist with worry. "What if I mess up? What if I forget the steps?" she muttered to herself as she walked the length of her living room again, her bare feet lightly tapping against the floor as she rehearsed the choreography in her head.
Every now and then, she would stop, take a deep breath, and go through the motions, her body moving stiffly as her mind raced. "One, two, three, spin... No, that's not right!" she groaned, shaking her head and starting over.
The pressure of the night was weighing on her. It wasn't just the dance, but the entire event-she wanted everything to go perfectly. The gown, the performance, the evening with Sunoo. But the more she thought about it, the more her nerves got the best of her.
Nabi grabbed her phone, considering calling Sunoo for some reassurance, but she hesitated. He had been looking forward to the ball for weeks, and she didn't want to worry him with her nerves. Instead, she put her phone back down and took another deep breath. "I've got this," she whispered to herself, trying to summon some confidence.
She went over the steps again, slower this time, trying to calm her racing thoughts. With every movement, she could feel her heart pounding, but she knew that she just had to get through it. The masquerade ball was supposed to be fun, but right now, it felt like the biggest challenge she'd faced in a long time.
"I just need to relax," she said to herself. "It's going to be fine. I just need to get through this dance, and everything else will fall into place." But despite her words, the nervous energy remained, and she continued pacing around her apartment, going over the steps again and again, hoping that by the time the ball started, she would feel more in control.
Suddenly, a harsh cough escaped Nabi's throat, catching her off guard. She stopped in her tracks, her hand instinctively going to her chest as the all-too-familiar pain of her lung fibrosis flared up. The sharp, tight sensation wrapped around her lungs, making it difficult to breathe for a moment.
For a few seconds, she stood still, focusing on taking shallow, careful breaths. The discomfort was something she had learned to live with, but it always reappeared at the worst possible times-like now, just hours before the masquerade ball.
"I can't let this stop me," she whispered to herself, determined to push through the pain. Her hands trembled slightly as she grabbed her phone and scrolled through her playlist, finding the song that always helped her focus. She pressed play on "Nobody knows" by Kiss of Life, the familiar beats filling the room. The song's rhythm was steady, something she had used to rehearse her dance steps over and over again.
