One of the girls, with long, sleek hair and an effortless confidence, leaned in closer to Sunoo as she laughed at something he said. The gesture seemed harmless, but to Nabi, it felt like a spotlight had been cast on her own insecurities. She tugged at the sleeve of her dress, her chest tightening with unease.
Sunoo, oblivious to her growing discomfort, continued talking and laughing. Nabi tried to remind herself that he was just being friendly, but the way the girl looked at him—her smile too warm, her laugh a little too sweet—made her stomach twist. A flicker of jealousy crept in, though she quickly pushed it down, feeling silly for even thinking that way.
"Are you okay?" Sunoo finally asked, turning to her with a concerned look after noticing her silence.
Nabi forced a smile, nodding quickly. "Yeah, I’m fine," she said softly, though the tightness in her chest remained.
"You sure?" he pressed, his hand brushing against hers. "We can leave if you’re not feeling comfortable."
"No," she said quickly, shaking her head. "I’m okay. Really."
He smiled, leaning in slightly to whisper, "You look beautiful tonight. Don’t let anyone make you feel otherwise, alright?"
Her cheeks flushed at his words, and she nodded again, his reassurance calming her slightly. But as another girl approached, her attention on Sunoo, Nabi couldn’t help but feel like a shadow in his light. She stayed by his side, but her thoughts were elsewhere, wondering if she truly fit in his world.
Then, Sunoo turned his attention to the girl who had just approached, another girl. She was tall, with wavy, glossy hair and a confident smile that immediately drew attention. "Sunoo!" she greeted brightly, placing a hand lightly on his arm. "It’s been ages since we’ve talked. How have you been?"
Sunoo grinned, his easygoing charm on full display. "Oh, you know, keeping busy," he replied. "What about you, Mina? Still acing all your classes and making the rest of us look bad?"
Mina laughed, flipping her hair over her shoulder. "Of course. Someone’s got to keep the competition alive, right?" Her tone was playful, but the way she leaned slightly closer to him didn’t escape Nabi’s notice.
Standing beside Sunoo, Nabi felt her chest tighten again. She tried to remind herself that Sunoo was just being friendly, but the way Mina's attention seemed completely focused on him made it hard to shake the uneasy feeling. Her fingers fidgeted with the hem of her dress as she cast a quick glance around the room, wondering if anyone else noticed—or cared—that she was standing right there.
"So, are you still planning to go to that big festival next month?" Mina asked, her voice light but lingering. "You promised you'd go with us last year, but you bailed. No excuses this time!"
