Later that evening, she stood at the edge of the decorated gymnasium, which had been transformed for the masquerade ball. The room was filled with people, the soft hum of conversation and music filling the air. Nabi felt a flutter of nerves in her chest as she adjusted her mask and smoothed down the skirt of her dress. Her hair was loose, cascading in soft curls that framed her face, and the gown Sunoo had given her flowed elegantly around her, making her feel both graceful and slightly out of place.
Despite the elegance of her appearance, she felt a bit lost. She scanned the crowd for Sunoo, hoping to find the familiar face that would help ease her nerves. But he was nowhere to be seen. Jungwon, too, was absent from her view, leaving her feeling unexpectedly alone in the sea of masked faces.
She lingered by the wall, her fingers nervously playing with the edge of her dress, unsure if she should step into the crowd. As she stood there, however, she couldn't help but notice the glances she was getting. People whispered to each other, their voices hushed but filled with curiosity.
"Who is she?" one voice murmured.
"She looks stunning," said another, their tone filled with admiration. "I've never seen her before."
Nabi overheard the whispers, and though they made her feel self-conscious, she also found herself strangely comforted by the anonymity. The mask she wore shielded her identity, and for the first time that night, she was free from the weight of being "Nabi." She was just a beautiful stranger in a sea of other beautiful strangers, and in that moment, it felt liberating.
No one knew who she was, and honestly, she found that freeing. She didn't have to be the shy girl worrying about her dance or the girl struggling with her condition. She could just exist in this magical, mysterious moment, without the expectations or pressures that normally followed her. It was almost like stepping into a dream, one where she didn't have to explain herself to anyone.
But as the minutes ticked by and the murmurs around her continued, a small knot of nerves remained. Sunoo wasn't there yet, and the longer she stood alone, the more she felt a longing for his presence. She wanted to share this night with him, to feel the comfort of his familiar warmth beside her.
With a deep breath, she steeled herself, reminding herself that Sunoo would find her soon. Until then, she decided to enjoy this moment of anonymity, standing tall and allowing herself to feel confident, even as the whispers around her grew louder.
Suddenly, a boy who Nabi had never spoken to before approached her from the crowd. His stride was confident, and he wore a simple but elegant mask that covered most of his face, leaving only his curious, sparkling eyes visible. Nabi's heart immediately began to race, her nerves skyrocketing. She had already been feeling tense, and now, with a stranger addressing her, she felt even more uncertain.
