As Jungwon walked down the quiet hallway, his footsteps echoed faintly against the sterile floors. Each step felt heavier than the last, as if the weight of his emotions was dragging him down. His mind replayed their conversation over and over, her tears, her trembling voice, and the way she’d held onto him.
Just as he reached the end of the hall, a sudden piercing sound broke through the silence—the shrill, rapid beeping of a monitor. He froze, his heart skipping a beat as the sound sent a chill down his spine. Turning sharply, he recognized the direction it was coming from: Nabi’s room.
His body moved before his mind could process, his feet pounding against the floor as he sprinted back toward her door. Nurses and a doctor rushed past him, entering her room in a flurry of urgency.
When he reached the doorway, his heart dropped. Nabi lay still on the bed, her face pale and her chest rising and falling shallowly. The heart monitor was going wild, its erratic beeping filling the room as the medical team worked quickly to stabilize her.
"Nabi!" Jungwon shouted, his voice cracking as he tried to step into the room. A nurse blocked his path, her hands firmly on his shoulders.
"You can’t be in here right now," she said urgently. "Please step back."
"But she—!" Jungwon began, his voice shaking with panic. He craned his neck, trying to see past the flurry of activity around her. "She was fine just a moment ago!"
"Sir, I need you to step back," the nurse repeated firmly, pushing him gently but insistently out of the doorway. "We’re doing everything we can."
Jungwon stumbled back into the hallway, his chest heaving as he gripped the frame of the door. His mind raced, his pulse pounding in his ears as he watched the medical team work. He couldn’t believe this was happening—not now, not after everything.
His eyes locked on Nabi’s still form, and a wave of helplessness washed over him. "Nabi," he whispered, his voice trembling. "Please… don’t leave."
Tears blurred his vision as he pressed his back against the cold wall, sliding down until he was sitting on the floor. He buried his face in his hands, his heart aching with a pain he couldn’t describe. The thought of losing her—of never seeing her smile or hearing her voice again—was unbearable.
Moments felt like hours as he waited, the sound of the monitor and muffled voices of the medical team echoing in his ears. He clenched his fists, his knuckles turning white as he prayed silently for her to pull through.
Finally, the beeping began to stabilize, the chaotic rhythm evening out into a steady, reassuring pattern. Jungwon looked up, his heart still pounding as the doctor emerged from the room.
"She’s stable for now," the doctor said, his tone calm but serious. "She had an acute episode, likely triggered by stress. We’ve administered medication to help her breathing, but she’ll need close monitoring."
