From across the room, Jungwon stood near the edge of the crowd, watching the exchange with a heavy heart. He could see how much Sunoo cared for her, how deeply she trusted him. And while he knew Sunoo was what Nabi needed, the sight still stung more than he wanted to admit.
Taehyun appeared beside him, nudging his shoulder lightly. "You good?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.
Jungwon forced a small smile, though it didn’t reach his eyes. "Yeah," he said quietly. "I’m fine."
Taehyun didn’t push, though he could see the tension in Jungwon’s posture. "Come on," he said after a moment, gesturing toward the drink table. "Let’s get you something. You look like you could use it."
Jungwon hesitated before nodding, following Taehyun reluctantly. As they walked away, his thoughts remained on Nabi, wondering if she would ever see the part of him that still longed for her—or if he’d always be the one standing on the sidelines, watching from afar.
Nabi stood by the edge of the pool, the cool night air brushing against her flushed cheeks. The sounds of the party inside were distant, almost muffled, as she stared at the shimmering water beneath the moonlight. Her thoughts were hazy, her inhibitions still dulled from the drinks she’d had earlier.
Suddenly, an idea sparked in her mind—a spontaneous, reckless thought that seemed perfectly reasonable in her current state. Why not go in?
Without overthinking it, Nabi kicked off her shoes and stepped onto the pool’s edge. The water looked inviting, almost hypnotic under the soft glow of the outdoor lights. She giggled softly to herself before stepping in, the cold water shocking her senses as it soaked through her dress.
She waded in deeper, her movements slow and unsteady, but she didn’t care. For the first time all evening, she felt free—free from the stares, the whispers, and her own nagging thoughts. She floated on her back for a moment, staring up at the stars, her wet hair fanning out around her.
Unbeknownst to her, Jungwon had just stepped outside, drawn by the sound of faint splashing. When he spotted her in the water, his heart dropped. "Nabi!" he called out, rushing to the edge of the pool. "What are you doing? You could get hurt!"
Nabi turned her head lazily to look at him, her eyes half-lidded with a relaxed smile. "I’m fine, Jungwon," she said, her words slightly slurred but playful. "It’s just water."
But Jungwon wasn’t convinced. Without a second thought, he kicked off his shoes and jumped into the pool, the splash sending ripples across the surface. He swam over to her quickly, his hands steadying her shoulders as he checked her over. "You shouldn’t be doing this," he said, his voice tinged with both worry and frustration. "You’ve been drinking. What if something happened?"
Nabi laughed softly, her cheeks flushed from both the cold water and the alcohol. "Nothing happened," she said, gently pushing his hands away. "See? I’m fine. Stop worrying so much."
