The unexpected news of the pregnancy has thrown me for a loop, but it is somehow making me more present with the girls. After getting home from the appointment, not so much. I needed a moment to collect myself and ended up lying in bed until dinner. But after that, I've been able to spend the rest of last night and the entire day today with them, keeping my patience, not needing to walk away, and overall being the mom I used to pride myself on being before I got so depressed. Now, granted, I think about the pregnancy and almost burst into tears each time... probably not the healthiest but I think caring for the girls is occupying my mind from the pregnancy altogether somehow. That being said, being present doesn't mean I don't feel sluggish, but at this point I blame that on the hormone changes and emotions going along with them. Not to mention, I wish Joe were here to just help me through it. But I don't want to tell him right now. He's not home, he's gonna worry about me, it's too much to lay on him when he's working.
"Mommy, is daddy working?" Willa asks as we sit at the table, the girls eating their chicken, mac and cheese, and broccoli.
How I got two kids that love broccoli, I will never understand, but I also refuse to complain.
I nod. "Yeah, baby, daddy's working. I think he's gonna call us in a little bit."
As if on cue, my phone rings, vibrating against the table.
"Daddy!" Delphine giggles.
"Is it daddy mommy? Is it daddy?" Willa squeals.
I sigh, putting the phone to my ear. "Hello?"
"Hi baby," Joe breathes, clearly only moments after walking off stage.
"Hi," I reply. "How was-"
"Is it daddy?!" Willa squeals again. "Mommy!"
I sigh, putting him on speaker as he chuckles. "Why don't you ask?"
"Daddy, is that you?!" Willa asks.
"Hi princess!"
"Daddy!" she giggles. "Daddy I'm eating my dinner!"
"You're eating your dinner?!" he asks excitedly. "That's awesome, princess! What are you having for dinner?"
"Um," she starts. "Chicken and mac and cheese and broccoli."
"Yum!" he exclaims. "Is Del there?"
"Hi daddy!" she squeals. "Hi!"
"Hi wild one," he chuckles. "Have you been good for mommy today?"
"Yeah!" they both exclaim.
"Mommy?" he asks.
I sigh, trying to stay upbeat. "Yeah, they've been good."
He hesitates. "Okay."
After talking to the girls for a few more minutes and trying to bring me into the conversation a few more times, getting the same fake enthusiasm as before, Joe clears his throat.
"Girls, can you let mommy walk away for a minute? I've gotta tell her a secret."
"No, I want to talk to you, daddy!"
"I know, princess, but I've gotta talk to mommy," he tells her.
"Okay," she giggles.
"Okay," he says in a funny voice. "Mommy, go to our room."
"Yeah, mommy!" Willa giggles.
I grin, kissing her head before walking away, letting my face fall as soon as she can't see me. I exit to the bedroom, sighing as I plop onto the bed, immediately starting to play with the blanket.
