Aris and I had gone through everything together. Well, everything that we could remember. We had actually come in the box together, with him sleeping on my lap as I tried to figure out what was happening. Even when it opened to reveal our home for the next few years, I still didn't know what was going on. Just that I was terrified and was meant to protect this seemingly random, unconscious boy.

As time went on things only got harder. Between almost being banished, finding our way out of the Maze, escaping WCKD, fighting Cranks in the Scorch, and getting out of WCKD a second time, nothing about our lives had been easy.

One thing was the same though. We always had each other. Even in separate rooms in WCKD, we would sneak through the vents or speak to each other through the walls, going as far as to make our own language consisting of light taps and knocks. I genuinely don't think I would have had the will to go on for long without him.

We had been rescued again, and even then, were found side by side. That wasn't really a choice though, but fate.

"Besides being hit, I'm touch starved. Besides, it's not that bad,"he tried to tell me. I shot him a look which he ignored as he moved closer. Leaning over me, he gently placed his hand on my cheek while brushing his lips against mine. I just barely kissed back when he winced and pulled away.

"Here. Let me see,"I urged, sitting up. Glancing at his face, I scanned every part just in case. Thankfully, nothing seemed to be worse than before. While some bruises were more prevalent, it wasn't something that could cause too much damage. Unfortunately, it was definitely causing a good amount of pain.

"I'm sorry,"I whispered, pushing back his hair where I knew there wouldn't be any injuries. He gave me a small smile before laying back beside me. Running my fingertips over his back, I whispered sweet nothings and words of love until his eyes fluttered shut and his breathing evened out.

Moving for just a moment, I grabbed the extra blanket and tugged it over us. Watching the way he was sleeping, actually sleeping, made everything okay. There was no shaking or crying or any signs of paranoia or fear.

For the first time in so long, he looked content.
