Sonya's P.O.V
The sand was warm under both of us, a soft white that blended into the never ending sea. The waves crashed peacefully on the shore, rising and falling at the perfect pace. The setting sun was casting an orange glow as the sky turned a light pink, stretching beyond the horizon.
That's not what made the moment heaven though.
It was my girlfriend sitting beside me. With denim shorts that almost reached her knees and a plain top, she was the most beautiful girl I've ever seen.
She was quiet tonight. It seemed to just be one of those times where silence was better than filling the air. Being together, embracing each other's presence, was just as important as talking until we fell asleep.
It's just that she's been like that a lot lately. Quiet. It's not even only around me. She doesn't seem to want to talk to people she would go on for hours with. While I'd like to believe she would go to me if that was for any particular reason, she's not good with conflict. Despite her friend group of guys and tomboy personality and appearance, she was a softie. Her heart was too pure for its own good.
Staring at the sand, she drew on it with her fingers. Her seafloor was absolutely wonderful, with seaweed and coral that was exactly where it needed to be.
"It's almost as pretty as you,"I sighed, stuck in the trance she put me under.
A trance that was broken as she looked up from the ground, tears suddenly forming in her eyes. In a flash, I watched my lovely girl go from peaceful to upset, confirming that she wasn't just not feeling like talking.
"It's okay, love. It's okay,"I assured her, wrapping my arms around her. Sniffling, she held me tightly as she cried into my shirt. Pulling her on my lap, I rubbed her back as she broke down, every emotion she had insisted on bottling up finally exploding in a mess of tears. Whispering soothing words in her ear, I rocked her back and forth. Nuzzling her face into my neck, she took shallow breaths, like she was being strangled.
"Love, I need you to breathe with me,"I coaxed, pulling her away just enough. As she weakly nodded, I took a deep breath in. Copying as best she could, she held her breath with me, even when sad sounds escaped. Slowly exhaling, I made sure she did the same before inhaling again. This time, she did so without coughing, gradually returning to her normal state. Only when she was fully back to that, did I stop.
"Can you tell me what happened?"I asked gently, cradling her face as I wiped away her tears. When her cheeks were dried (even though her eyes were bloodshot), she got out of my lap, staring down at her drawing.
"You won't . . . you won't be with me one day,"She whispered, catching me so off guard I had to ask her to repeat herself to make sure I heard her right. When she did so in that same weak voice, I moved closer, taking her hand.
"I want you forever. I'm so lucky to have you. So, so lucky. You're sweet, funny, gorgeous, empathic, bright. You're everything good in this world and so out of my league. There will never be a day I don't want to be with you,"I promised.
"But I'm just,"She trailed off.
"Just what, love?"
"Not feminine. I hang out with guys more and dress like one and don't match you at all."
Even while sitting, I swear I stumbled back in disbelief. She's my favorite person in the entire world, and I can't even begin to imagine a future where she isn't.
"You don't match me, but you complete me. You make getting up in the morning worth it. You're the greatest thing that's ever happened. I don't care what you look like or who's around you. As long as you're that same wonderful girl, nothing will change."
Nodding in understanding, she moved over back to next to me, firmly grasping my hand.
"Who would tell you lies like that?"I questioned.
"You know the group that sits by the beach? The one always by the sand?"She whispered
"Yes."
"They're always saying things like that. I haven't done anything to them, and they're still so mean. I don't know why. All I want is to be happy with my friends and you. And they make fun of everything I do. What I wear and who I hang out and what I'm good at and how much better you can do."
"I can never do better than you. Ever,"I assured her.
"Really?"
"Really."
Wiping her nose, she gave me a weak smile. Pulling her in for another hug, I rubbed her back again, comforting her as best I could.
"I love you,"She mumbled.
"I love you too,"I swore, pulling away to kiss her temple. Her shoulders relaxed as she untensed, coming to the realization that there wasn't even another choice to pick as long as she's involved.
That doesn't solve the problem though.
Looking over my shoulder, I saw the pathetic group hanging around, talking amongst themselves. Standing up, I went to take care of it only for Y/N to lightly tug on my hand. As I turned to face her, she shook her head. She's always been so passive like that, doing anything but hurting someone. Even when they deserved it.
"It won't get better if I don't go over there. You don't have to be involved with this. At all. I'll fix it."
"But I don't want you to get hurt,"She whispered.
"I'll be fine. I'll come right back to you. Alright?"
Closing her eyes, she sighed as she nodded. Squeezing her hand, I silently swore it was going to work out. When she squeezed back, I knew I was fine to go.
Slipping my hand out of hers, I told my heart not to race just yet as I approached them. It's best to keep a calm facade to catch them off guard.
As I got closer, I heard their annoying laughs, probably at the pain of another person. Hell, they're probably the ones that caused it.
I don't know their names, and I don't need to. That doesn't matter for putting them in their place. No matter what I refer to them as, the message will be the same.
Storming up, ignoring her nervous gaze for now, I identified the ring leader. A tall boy with pale skin and dark hair. Someone you wouldn't even give a second glance at.
"You wanna explain yourselves?"I asked simply. One of the girls gave a nervous laugh as another looked down at her shoes. Tapping my foot, I waited for an answer.
"Explain wh-"
"No, we're not going to do that. So listen here. Y/N is my girl. There is nothing in this world that could ever, ever change that. And I will always protect her, no matter who it's from. If you come near her again, you're going to find out how. Have I made myself clear?""Yeah. Crystal,"He scowled.
"Good. Now,"I said simply, kicking him in the shin. He yelped as he fell to the ground, holding his bruised ankle. "I have to get back to Y/N,"I sighed, clapping my hands together before turning around.
There. Problem solved.
