My feet, my hands, my neck, all of me was in pain. I had hated the Glade since I first arrived. The lack of other girls, the constantly scorching sun, and monsters surrounding me all ensured all was in hell.
Why did the alternative have to be this though? Actual scorching sun, a terrifying disease that we don't know whether or not we’re affected by, and being on the run from the same people that put us in the Glade in the first place. I signed up for being outside with fresh air and swimming with my friends by the sea. This was not supposed to be part of the plan. Everything was supposed to be over. Everyone was supposed to be free.
That’s not reality though. Reality is always bleaker than you asked for, colder than what feels fair. It's a cruel, taunting vice that shows you things you can't even begin to imagine.
“You doing alright over here, love?”
I looked back at Newt, who had remained way too calm throughout the storms we were being put through. The fact that he's only human, that he isn't someone invincible and fighting this with no problem, doesn't seem true at times.
But somehow it absolutely is.
I shrugged as I moved over in the sand, letting him sit beside me. He accepted in an instant, leaning his head back against the rock.
“This isn't really what I had in mind for adventure when we left,”I spoke, not wanting to be alone with my thoughts.
“That’s one way to put it,”he agreed, passing me the canteen without a second thought. While that can’t be true seeing as every resource out here is basically gold, acting like otherwise gives us all a sense of normalcy that we desperately need. And shows love on another level of course, which I appreciate. I really do.
I just wish things were different.
The water was like heaven, a little warm but still crisp and fresh in this heat. It was the type of hydration you would pray for when you were hard at work and begging for just one little break. The relief my throat got was nothing short of bliss that made you want to let your guard down, a perfection that mother nature was a little too scarce with.
“You can have a little more. You're gonna need it,”he encouraged as I handed it back.
“We don't know how much longer we’ll be out here,”I reasoned.
“It can't be that much longer,”he attempted to assure me. Still, I watched him rub his left eyebrow, the blonde bristles going back and forth at the unconscious tell.
“We said that not that much longer ago.”
With a sigh, he wrapped an arm around me, pulling me into him. Resting my head on his chest, I closed my eyes as I hugged his neck, taking in one of the only forms of comfort I have left in this damned reality.
