Aomine is an accidental genius, meaning that he is an idiot and doesn't ever try, but when he does, he is really intelligent and gets really good scores/results. This is especially apparent on the basketball court when he gets really into the game, and in turn terrifies Imayoshi.
Actually, most of the Miracles have noticed this, and Midorima and Akashi know that if Aomine actually tried, he could surpass Midorima and be good competition for Akashi.
