Chapter 54
When I woke next Quinn is lying next to me. His eyes are closed, I can't tell if he's sleeping or not, I don't think he is.
My head still hurts, but not nearly as bad as it did. Moving closer to him, I closed my eyes, feeling the warmth of his body, it took me a second to notice that he has no shirt on, his warm skin against mine, is comforting.
Starting to drift off, but arms tightened around me, waking me up. "I thought you were asleep."
I said smiling into his chest. "I could say the same for you." He went quiet for a moment; and I started to wonder if he's fallen back to sleep.
"How are you feeling?" "Better. My head still hurts a little, but not nearly as much as it did before. How is everything out there?" "It's all cleaned up. I managed to fix the door, I got a dead bolt for it, and reset the security system. For now we're safe. But I still don't know who it was."
Closing my eyes, I sighed. "I know who it was. It was Cormac; I know it was. He's the only one that would do that to us. Everyone else in town loves you, and they sort of like me." "They love you. But we still don't know for sure that it was him."
I didn't say anything, I know it was him; I just have to prove it to him, and I will. I don't care what it takes, I will prove it to him, that it was Cormac.
"How long was I out?" "It's Sunday so not for long, but still, it scared me a little." "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you. How is everything at the shop?" "Fine. People have been asking about you. I just told them you weren't feeling well." I moved so I'm no longer huddled against his chest. "We should get in there, and help."
"No. Tina is there helping Lisa. So you and I are staying right here." "You know it's only a few days until you know." He nodded. "I know. I have most of the food, I just have to pick up a few more things for dinner, and then we're set. Now I need to check in, at the shop. You stay here, and I will be right back. Do not move."
He kissed my head, and as gently as he could got off the bed, closing the door behind him; so I can't hear him. Lying back, I picked the gun up from my nightstand; taking a good look at it.
If only I could have gotten a shot off; then things would have ended up very differently today.
"Tina said everything is fine." Quinn said coming back into the room, with two plates seeing me with the gun. "She also said for you to get better." Looking at him. "What did you tell them?" "I told them that you have a stomach bug. You need to eat." Taking the gun from me, he handed me the plate; setting the gun further away from me. "We have to attack at him. I don't care what you say; it was him. I know it was." Putting a hand over my mouth, stopping me. "Stop. You're getting yourself worked up, you need to calm down."
He's right. Leaning my head against the head board; he removed his hand. I closed my eyes.
All those years of wandering around, hoping that I might find someone else of my kind that survived that night. Now I have someone not far away, and he's trying to kill me.
After the hunters killed all those dragons that night; my family, I wanted to kill all of them, but now sitting here next to someone that I know I should kill, but I can't.
Once upon a time Cormac was my best friend, but now. All he is, is an enemy that will stop at nothing to get what he wants.
Now it's all as if Cormac is now the hunter, and I'm the hunted. Something moving made my eyes flash open, changing my vision. Quinn has moved so he's sitting next to me on my bed, staring at me.
"What were you just thinking about?" He asked as he's studying my face.
"Just thinking about the past. How so much has changed. I don't know what to do about it." Moving so I can see him directly, taking his hand.
"There is something I want you to know Shayla. It doesn't matter what happens, in the near future. I will never stop loving you, no matter what we have to do, or what Cormac does."
"I love you too Quinn. Before I met you, everything I thought I knew was wrong. My family taught me that your kind were monsters, scum that has to be destroyed. But I know there wrong. If there are any others are still out there, I hope that there like you." He moved closer to me, so his face is just inches away from mine. "It doesn't matter what happens between us. I love you and that will never change."
He kissed me, pulling me closer to him until our bodies are pressed together as tightly as they can be.
Breaking apart coming up for air, I smiled at him, still holding onto each other, and never wanting to let go.
Neither one of us said a word as we stared at each other. His cell started ringing, making us both jump.
"I think you need to get that." I said letting go of him. "But I don't want to." He said, smiling at him. Reaching into the pocket of his jeans, I pulled out his still ringing cell, holding it in front of him. Sighing he took it answering it.
"Hello? Yeah I'm with her. What's wrong? Okay I will be right in." hanging up he looked at me.
"What is it?" "That was Lisa. He needs me at the bakery. She didn't say what it is. But she did say it was urgent. I don't want to leave you alone again."
Touching his check, I said. "I know. But you have to. If they show up again, then I'll use the gun." I said reaching around him to get the gun.
"Now off you go, and come back as soon as you can." Getting up from bed, I followed him to the door, waving to him as he started down the street.
Locking the door behind me, I grabbed Lilith and with my gun and phone I went into Quinn's room, closing the door behind me.
