While the others had run off, Echo ventured alone through the underworld, her footsteps echoing softly against the cold stone floors as if the ground whispered secrets. Guided by the unmistakable trace of Akira's magic, she followed the elusive threads that drew her deeper into the underworld until she arrived at the imposing entrance of the Grand Library.
A musty scent enveloped her as she pushed open the heavy doors, mingling with the faint fragrance of aged parchment. The air felt heavy with knowledge as if the accumulated wisdom of centuries clung to every corner of the vast library. Shadows danced and flickered, cast by the dim glow of antique chandeliers hanging from the high ceiling. But the lighting was like the sun itself compared to the rest of the underworld. This space seemed a lot more preserved and advanced. She was definitely on the royal grounds.
"... it's like a ghost town around here..." she muttered, looking around the large area, her voice swallowed by the stillness of the library. The silence was broken only by the faint sound of her own breathing.
Echo's gaze swept across the sprawling space, taking in row upon row of towering bookshelves, their shelves packed with countless volumes. She ran her fingertips along the worn spines, feeling the rough texture and fine layer of dust that clung to them. Her touch was light with respect as she skimmed along the shelf. Each touch revealed a story, a piece of history waiting to be discovered.
Her footsteps echoed softly as she moved along the aisles, her senses overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of knowledge surrounding her. The ancient tomes seemed to watch her, their weighty presence imposing and captivating. They held the secrets of the underworld's history, the rise and fall of the royal family, and the mysteries of magic and abilities.
Suddenly, a voice, unmistakably Akira's, resonated through the library, piercing the quiet like a whisper in the dark.
"For centuries..." he read.
Her head jerked up, her breath catching in her throat. The voice was coming from upstairs, further into the library's depths.
Curiosity mixed with worry as Echo hurried past the colossal stairway, her steps barely making a sound. She crouched beneath the stairway, her senses heightened. She heard Akira's measured steps above her from her concealed vantage point.
"There has been war between vampires and angels... the human world is one protected by the angels while acting as a food bowl for the vampires. The vampires' vile disturbances to this world triggered an ever-fueled hatred between angel and vampire kind. But then... during the Golden Age... it wasn't just the vampires interfering with the humans' precious society," Akira read out loud, book in hand.
"Demons invaded, teaching humans magic during a time of advancement. They used humans to spread the knowledge of magic and expand its study. Predictability, the drawbacks were revealed. Humans became corrupt... triggering what would be known as..." his words hung in the air, leaving an eerie echo.
"The Winged War," a familiar voice finished.
Echo's eyes widened, recognising the voice instantly.
Akira's gaze drew to the voice...
"Hm. It's been a while... Haru. Kyou," Akira muttered, looking up from the book to see two figures approaching him.
Echo's lips parted, barely containing her surprise. It's the twins...?!!! How did they get here?!!
She clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms, as she silently observed the unfolding confrontation.
"How often must you go over that thing, your highness? You realise no matter how many times you read it... the words won't change," Kyou mentioned.
