Tameron yelped in surprise and jumped back from Nugget's pokey little head.
Blayze had left me in charge of the five year old while he attended to some job out at the pump of the North-West paddock on this sunny, blue sky Spring day with barely a breath of wind in the air.
I figured it was time to try and minimise Tameron's phobia of Horses.
I'd figured that the Shetland cross Miniature, Nugget, who stands at a beastly nine hands high (note the sarcasm) would be the perfect candidate.
Nugget taught me how to ride.
He'd taught my cousins and siblings what they know to date.
He's twenty-two years old and knows how to pony-sit kids!
Tameron however, wasn't exactly keen to meet the pony half way.
"He won't hurt you, Tameron."
I promised for what felt like the thousandth time.
We had Nugget ground tied at the hitching rail.
The midget was craning his stumpy little neck every now and again to reach into the hay bag that was hanging off the rail and steal a few strands of hay.
All I wanted Tameron to do right now, was brush the damn pony's body.
Or at the very least pat him.
Every time he stepped in to attempt to brush the chestnut fur though, Nugget would turn his head to sniff and lick at the small boy.
That made Tameron practically fly backwards in fright.
As a girl who had grown up around horses much bigger than Nugget, it just made me roll my eyes.
"He wants to bite me!"
Tameron insisted.
"No he doesn't!"
I sighed in exasperation.
"He just wants to groom you back!"
Tameron squinted up at me, looking adorably confused.
"Groom me?"
He questioned.
A little of my frustration melted away.
He was a cute Kid.
"Yes."
I nodded.
"That's what horses do to each other. He won't bite you, he know's he's not allowed to."
I promised.
Biting into his lower lip, Tameron turned to look at the Pony in question.
"Take a deep breath."
I urged the small boy.
He sucked in such an extravagant breath that I not only saw his chest and shoulders rise and fall, but I also heard it.
I couldn't help but smile.
Good boy.
"Now think about Nugget as a fluffy Teddy Bear as you walk towards him."
I coached.
Tameron schooled his face in an expression of determination and stepped forward.
Nugget turned his head to look at the small boy, long golden strands of hay hanging out the sides of his little mouth and a gentle nicker vibrated his belly.
Tameron giggled, reaching out his left hand.
Nugget sniffed at Tameron's outstretched hand, his breath whuffling over the boy's skin.
"He's warm!"
Tameron exclaimed, his giggle audible in his tone as he glanced quickly over at me.
I couldn't help but smile.
"He sure is."
I agreed.
I didn't dare say of course he's warm, he's real!
"Now pat his nose."
I urged.
Tameron carefully placed his left hand against the small nose Nugget had extended to him.
He gently ran his fingers down the shiny fur.
"Now place your right hand on his neck and give him a little rub."
I encouraged.
Tameron did as I suggested and Nugget immediately cocked his head to the side, his eyes rolling and his lips quivering.
Tameron giggled and began to work his fingers.
Nugget began to bob his head up and down and perform his trademark tap dance with his hind hooves.
I couldn't help but grin and Tameron laughed uncontrollably!
Shit!
I should get evidence of this for Blayze!
I quickly fumbled with my phone and activated the camera, switching it onto video mode.
Unfortunately the clip didn't last much more than about thirty seconds before Tameron stepped back, puffing and panting and Nugget stuffed his nose into the hay bag again.
My phone was suddenly vibrating.
I looked down to the screen.
I'd half been expecting Blayze to call and check up on Tameeon and I, but it was Mum's name that was plastered across the screen.
Shit.
Mum was currently on Zuke Babysitting Duty.
I quickly slipped my finger across the answer bar and put my phone tommy ear.
"Hello? What's wrong?"
My Mum's laughter reached my ear and my heart pounded with relief.
She wouldn't be laughing if something was wrong with Zuke.
"Hello Baby."
Mum greeted.
"How's the Pony desensitising going?"
I turned my gaze to the child and pony pair.
Cheeky little Nugget had even managed to find a mouthful of Lucerne.
I'd have to make sure he didn't get to too much of that!
Tameron was back to standing beside Nugget and he had a brush with soft bristles in his left hand.
"I wiw just get this mud off for you."
Tameron told the pony.
I couldn't help but smile as he moved to a patch on Nugget's side that there actually was a small cluster of dried mud and he started to brush at it.
"Really well actually."
I told Mum.
"Oh that's great!"
She exclaimed.
I couldn't help but laugh.
"Oh!"
Mum stated.
"Oh?"
I asked, raising a questioning eyebrow even though she couldn't actually see me.
"Zuke's asking to go out."
Mum told me.
"Is he allowed?"
"He has to go out to toilet."
I told her.
"Just make sure you watch him and don't leave him out."
"Okay!"
Mum agreed.
"We'll be up to the house fairly soon."
I told her.
"Okay honey, take your time."
"Bye."
I told her,
"Bye."
Mum replied.
I pulled my phone from my ear and ended the call.
"Was that my Dad?"
Tameron questioned, turning around to squint up at me.
"No."
I told him.
"That was my Mum."
"Oh."
"I'll call your Dad when we're done with Nugget if you want and we can see how he's going."
I offered.
Tameron grinned.
"Okay!"
"Is Nugget all clean now?"
I asked, gesturing towards the Pony.
"No!"
Tameron turned quickly back to Nugget's side.
"He's got dirt on him!"
He exclaimed, pointing to Nugget's side.
"He was probably itchy and went for a roll."
I explained, twisting around to lean against the hitching rail.
"Why does he roll to scratch?"
Tameron asked, staring up at me in confusion.
I couldn't help but smile.
"Because horses can't reach behind them like people can."
"Oh!"
"Wanna get that dirt off for him?"
I asked, nodding to the patch.
Tameron spun on his heel and got to brushing the pony again.
