THE NEXT DAY
Standing against the dresser in Matt's room at the hospital, one of the nurses on call had brought in his belongings. The smell of his newly dried clothes had filled my lungs as he took each piece out one by one.
"Elena doesn't want to be a vampire." Matt hissed as he fixed his jacket collar.
"And she doesn't want to die either. This isn't your fault, Matt?" I whispered.
"What do you mean? This is all my fault. I was driving. I was saved. She's a vampire because of me!"
"Can you say that any louder?" I blurted out, pushing my self off from the dresser.
"Sorry...have you heard about Tyler?"
"Yeah, he's been staying low for the past few days. The council is still trying to track him and Caroline down." I added.
"Shoot. Caroline, I haven't even called her."
"Don't worry...she's safe. She's at Elena's house."
"Don't you think that's a little too...I don't know, out there? Elena's house would be the first place they go to find vampires." Matt said.
"Not if Elena and Jeremy aren't there and on a nice week vacation." I chuckled.
Standing at the end of the room, Matt narrowed his eyes at me as I crossed my arms over my chest.
"They're staying with you, aren't they?"
"Stefan and I figured it would be best to hide Elena there while she's still trying to figure the whole vampire thing out," I said.
"So, why not throw her in a house with original witches...especially your mother, who hated the thought of you being a vampire."
Opening the door, Matt and I both headed out of his room and through the nurse's station.
"On the contrary, she hated that Klaus made me like this."
Seeing his head turn and look at me from the corner of my eye, I sighed heavily.
"...fine...I'll go see if she's okay."
Leaving him alone in the middle of the hallway as he headed for the elevator, I took the stairs instead. Passing a group of doctors, I managed to run into one of the policemen and priest that was in charge of the hunt right as I turned the corner.
"Shit." Turning back the other way as quickly as possible, I ran into one of the carts a nurse had parked behind me.
"Lauren Salvatore." The policeman said.
Hunched over, I slowly turned around and grabbed a few of the things that fell from the top of the cart as the policeman gathers all of the other things.
"Ms. Salvatore...are you nervous about something?" The Priest asked.
"No...just, in a rush," I mumbled.
"Are you visiting someone?"
Quietly, I could hear the sound of the policeman's heart pumping so fast that I could actually see his heart beating out of his chest.
"Yeah, Matt Donovan. But he just checked out, so...if you will excuse me."
Squeezing my way through them, there was a moment of silence between every heartbeat. The sound of velcro ripping followed by the pinching sensation pulsing in my neck.
"What the hell?" I blurted out, smacking the policeman's hand away from me.
"Wait, what-"
Seeing the needle on the floor, the three of us stared at it in awe before the Priest orders the officer ot pick it back up.
