THE NEXT DAY

Sitting on the backyard porch with my headphones in, I held my knees close to my chest as I stared off into the distance. Singing along to the song in my head, I watched as the sun had just peaked out from the top of trees, calling birds and animals out for the day.

It had been a whole day since I got the news about Katherine. The past 10 hours I've been outside wrapped up in a ball, Damon and everyone else had slowly made their way into the house. With their laughs echoing among the walls, I could hear every joke and insult they made about Katherine.

'My grams died trying to close a tomb she wasn't in.'

'Tyler's werewolf curse got triggered because of her.'

'Klaus followed her to Mystic Falls, and because of that we lost Jenna.'

'Lauren became a ripper because of her, causing a whole town to be slaughtered.' Damon hissed, taking another shot.

Sighing heavily, I took in another cold breath letting my lungs burn in pain until I heard the sound of the wind around me starting to pick up. Tossing leaves across the grass, everything scattered in circles, pulling and pushing twigs and small animals until the air finally settled.

"You're still out here?" Stefan whispered, hearing him close the back door.

"...what's it been like 4 hours?"

"10...but who's counting-, oh...every one inside who hates Katherine," I mumbled.

"They're reminiscing-"

Rolling my eyes at him, I stared as he slowly approached the back of the bench.

"Please...you and I both know that everything they're saying is true," I added.

Taking a seat next to me, Stefan wrapped me in a wool blanket that he brought out from my room.

"...she's been asking for you. Wondering when you're going to see her..."

Hazing around the backyard, I softly bit down on my bottom lip as the tightening feeling in my throat came crawling back up.

"Lauren?"

"I can't, Stefan..." I mumbled.

"...she...I can't go through this again, losing someone."

"I know...but she's your best friend and-"

"And it's Elena's fault." I blurted out.

"Lauren, she was-"

"If you hadn't given her the cure, none of this would've happened...would it?"

"How did you-"

"Please...you really think Katherine wouldn't keep details from me?" I said, rising from the bench.

"I didn't-"

"No, but you assumed...who's next huh? Who else are you going to kill out of my life?"

"Look, you're angry with how every-"

"No, Stefan. I'm angry that she's dying! I'm angry that someone like Katherine, a survivor...a mother...is dying. Maybe she was right." I sighed, heading for the door.

"What is that supposed to mean?"

"I'm better off without you...all of you." I hissed staring at the glass door as Stefan's head turns through the reflection.

"But all everyone around here does is get themselves killed..."

Sliding the door, I headed through the corridor as everyone else was still taking shots in the living room. The sound of their chuckles and laughs seemed to echo through the kitchen as the fireplace had warmed the entire place like an oven.
