Jac saw him standing by the window. He looked deep in thought. She wondered if he was thinking about her, it's just that lately she found it hard to think about much apart from him.
She looked forward to his daily visits when she was in hospital. His stories about the ward, the hospital, his kids, his silly corny jokes. The holding of hands.
Jac wasn't quite sure how that happened. The first time was because, completely out of character, she'd wanted to comfort him when he broke down about thinking he was going to lose her. She offered him her hand
"Fletch don't" was all she could manage. She felt as if she'd been run over by a truck but like she told him, she was glad he was there.
He'd taken her hand in both of his and stroked her knuckles and let tears fall on them both.
She loved him, she was pretty clear about that in her mind and that love grew with each day he came to her. There was a lot of time for thinking in there. Each day she resolved to initiate the conversation that they needed to have but each day when he arrived and took her hand, she bottled out, not wanting to ruin what they already had.
Getting ready for work, she realised she was paying extra attention to her hair and applying a little makeup, just enough to give her pale skin a little colour. She smiled at herself acting like a fifteen year old with a schoolgirl crush. There wasn't much time for crushes in the teenage Jac Naylor's life, surviving each day in care was more of a priority.
Jac had got out of her taxi - not being allowed to drive yet and spotted his clapped out car in the car park. She realised with a start that she did that every day -check whether his car was there. She shook her head at the sheer 'un-naylorness of it
She entered the ward, no welcoming committee. A few "good to have you back Ms Naylor"s but no sign of Fletch.
Trying to quell the disappointment that was building in her stomach she decided to go and find coffee in the staff room and there he was.
Standing with his back to her, he didn't know she was there. She stood staring at him before quietly approaching
"Hey" she said softly and needing to touch him laid her hand on his shoulder
He turned round and smiled.
"I'm totally screwed" she thought
Their exchange was almost over before it began and she was back in her office. She'd even forgotten to get coffee, such was the effect he had on her.
