We were sat in the doctors office today because there was something definitely wrong with Shawn for the last two weeks since the incident. I wanted to make sure that everything was okay and if it wasn't I want to get him some help.
I held Shawn's hand with my right hand and I had Adrian sleeping in my left arm, as he wouldn't sleep in his baby carrier. We sat on the two chairs in front of the doctors desk.
"So what seems to be the problem?" She asked and I sighed.
I explained the incident that happened to Shawn and she was horrified. "Ever since then he wakes up from nightmares almost every night. He can't be alone, he has to be with me constantly or Adrian, not that I mind. But he won't let us go out to even get grocery's because he has constant fear and I'm worried" I say with tears threatening to slip.
Shawn let out a sigh before I squeezed his hand to reassure him everything was fine. "Well, it seems that Mr Mendes is showing signs of separation anxiety, which is totally normal to be expected after such a traumatic incident" she explains and we nod.
"What are your nightmares usually about?" She asks Shawn.
"They're about the day I held hostage, beaten and almost killed. Also I keep seeing Serenity and Adrian being taken away because that's what Alana threatened before being taken away" he says with so much hurt in his voice.
My heart was weak just hearing and seeing the pain Shawn has been suffering.
"It seems like separation anxiety because in most cases people do fear loosing people they love or care about. Sometimes you may make-up scenarios in your head that won't happen, but you will believe it and that's what makes you scared of loosing someone." She explains
"Separation anxiety is common amongst many ages even babies who become attached to their mothers they will find it hard to let go of them" she carries on explaining.
"What can we do to help?" I ask and she starts typing on her computer.
"I would suggest counselling is the best way to let out your feelings and emotions. Counselling will help effectively if you start right away" she says and I nod as I was ready to do anything for Shawn.
"I have a councillor who will be willing to do sessions if you would like me to get in contact with him" she says and I nod desperately.
"I will give you a call about the counselling sessions and I'll call you back soon to catch up on the progress" she says and we nod.
"Thank you so much for you help" I say with a smile as we stood up and I adjusted Adrian putting him back into the carrier. Shawn mumbles a 'thank you' shaking her hand before she leaves the room as we both start getting ready to leave.
"I'm sorry" Shawn says looking down at me with glossy eyes.
"Shawn, you have nothing to be sorry about. This is not your fault, none of it is. All I want to do is help you be back to yourself and not live in fear. I love you and I promise you will be fine" I say pulling his face down so I can kiss him.
"I love you" he mumbles against my lips.
He holds the carrier in one hand and holds my hand in the other. We slowly walk out and make our way back to the car.
Today we had the court hearing but our lawyer said it's not necessary to be present in Shawn's state. Just speaking about it with Shawn and our lawyer was too much he was about to collapse. With a letter to talk about Shawn's mental and physical state, the judge has approved of Shawn not attending court however our lawyer will be there and then call me to tell me the decisions that has been made.
