"Once upon a time there was a dear little girl who was loved by every one who looked at her, but most of all by her grandmother, and there was nothing that she would not have given to the child. Once she gave her a little cap of red velvet, which suited her so well that she would never wear anything else. So she was always called Little Red Riding Hood." Laura reads the bedtime story to her children when Victor suddenly enters the room.
"Am I late for the bedtime stories time?" he asked while loosening his necktie
"Daddy ... Daddy ..." Nathaniel shouted and runs to his Daddy for a hug.
The four year old Victor Nathaniel, Nathan to his siblings, is the youngest among Victor and Laura's children, often joins his sisters Lauren Marie, 8 and Carmela Marie, 5 plus their Kuya Vino and Ate Althea, in their evening bedtime stories.
"Hello buddy, how are you?" Victor said and immediately carries his youngest son.
"I don't like the Little Red Riding Hood story Daddy" Nathan whispered to Victor
"Hello Daddy" Lauren greeted Victor with a kiss
"Daddy ..." Carrie exclaimed and wraps her arms around Victor's right leg.
"Even I didn't hear it, I still know what you were whispering Nathan" Laura said. "Hello Love, how's work? And where is Althea and Vino?" Laura greeted Victor and gave him a peck on his cheek.
"Dinala lang sa kitchen yung pinadala ni Mama na mga pasalubong nya. They will be here in a couple of minutes, they know that it is time for our bedtime stories and they don't want to miss it" Victor replied
"Isn't it that it's Ate Lauren's turn to choose our story for tonight?" Laura said while gently pokes on Nathan's nose. The little boy did not answer Laura but instead he sadly turns to Victor and wraps his little arms around his neck.
"I don't mind hearing the story of Little Red Riding Hood again" someone says from behind and Laura smiles when she sees her eldest son Vino widely smiles at the door steps with Althea. "The story always reminds me that I should not trust strangers even that stranger is nice to me." Vino said while he walks and sits on Carrie's Bed.
"I agree with Kuya Vino" Laura replied
"I don't like the wolf, it is scary" Nathan said
"Come and sit with me then Nathan. Ate Althea will hug you so you'll not get scared" Althea said and gets Nathan from Victor. "It is Mommy's time to read the story and she will be sad if we will not listen to her. We don't want that, right Nathan?" she said and Nathan noded.
"Thank you baby, what will I do without you?" Laura told Althea.
"You're welcome Mom" Althea said. "Let's start?" she added and everyone settles on their chosen places.
This is how the Friday and Saturday nights end for Monteiro household. Victor and Laura takes turn to read the story. And each child have their turn to choose which story to read. But when Althea turns thirteen, she stops choosing the story and take the reading task instead together with her Daddy Victor and Mommy Laura.
"This is the first time that someone complains about the story for the night" Victor commented after putting their children into sleep.
"Kahit naman ako malapit nang magcomplain, kasi naman, parang every turn na lang ni Lauren, yung The Little Red Riding Hood ang binabasa ko" Laura lamented
"What can you do, Little Red Riding Hood is her favorite story" Victor said.
"And favorite character too" Laura replied. "Anyway, how are you Love? How was your day?" she asked.
