"Every time I thought I'd got it made it seemed the taste was not so sweet."
Hilltop was a quaint little farming community that sat...well, at the top of a hill. There was a large mansion that seemed like it had some historic value to it. There were trailers about that I could only assume were the people's homes. It was rather lovely and endearing. It almost reminded me of the Greene's farmhouse.
Jesus introduced to a man named Gregory. He ran the place, apparently. Though, he didn't strike me as the leader type.
While we continued exchanging formalities, one of the people from Hilltop began angrily shouting at Gregory. Something along the lines of "Negan killed my brother because our drop was too light."
Who the hell is Negan?
The man stabbed Gregory in a frustrated rage--nothing fatal, thankfully--causing Rick to interfere. I stood behind Daryl as Rick handled the situation. I was better mentally but still had a hard time with the violence. Especially the way he could kill so easily, without a second thought. All of this sent a wave of nausea through my body.
Gregory and Jesus led us inside the large house so we could discuss...I don't even know what. I had a hard time focusing on much after the few events that have happened.
Jesus told us that Negan was the leader of a group called the Saviors. Hilltop was required to give them half of everything they have so that Negan wouldn't take them over. I thought that was a strange arrangement, honestly. It was definitely no fair compromise.
Rick and Maggie were talking with Gregory about some type of deal between Hilltop and Alexandria. I still felt lightheaded from the events not that long ago. Jesus tapped on my arm and I looked over at him.
"You okay?" he mouthed at me. I nodded slightly though I'm sure it wasn't convincing in the least. He gave a small nod towards the open door before sneaking himself and I outside.
"Really, are you okay?" he asked me again. I shrugged.
"I have a hard time with violence," I confessed.
"That's understandable," Jesus frowned. "I'm sorry that happened. We aren't usually like that here."
"Happens to the best of us. In this world, violence is more often than not."
Together, we sat on the front steps of the mansion. I quite liked Jesus' company. He had a very calm and friendly aura that was inviting to be around.
"I never got a chance to thank you for sticking up for me," Jesus remarked. "You really didn't have to do that. You didn't know me. You still don't really know me."
"There's kindness in your eyes," I told him. "I don't see that in a lot of people anymore, so when I do, I trust them."
Jesus smiled at my words. It felt nice to be able to have a friend like him.
"Well, thank you. If there's anything I can ever do for you, just let me know."
I nodded with a smile as I stared at the man beside me. After a moment, my eyes lit up.
"Can I braid your hair?" I excitedly asked. He chuckled before agreeing.
He moves down to the step beneath me and sat between my legs. Jesus' hair was absolutely gorgeous and I'm so glad somebody will let me do something with their hair. It's such a simple thing that makes this life feel a little more normal.
We chatted between ourselves, getting to know each other better while I braided his dusty gold hair. I put in two French braids along his temples, putting the middle part in a messy bun. It was a style that didn't seem like it should look well but it did.
The door to the mansion opened behind us, causing Jesus and I to turn and see who'd emerged. Daryl and Abraham stood there looking a little dumbfounded when they saw what Jesus and I were doing.
"Hey," I said simply.
"Oh, my God," Daryl groaned while rubbing a hand down his face. Abraham lost his shit at the reaction, doubling over and letting out a whole, hearty laugh.
"Wanna tell someone where you're going next time before running off?" he asked.
"Sorry," I shrugged before turning back to finish Jesus' hair.
"Looks good, Sarge. Maybe you can do mine next," Abraham complimented.
"Don't tempt me, Big Red."

We were finishing up our time at Hilltop. We agreed to side with the community and become an ally of sorts. Although, I did earn an earful from Daryl about why I shouldn't run off the way I did.
Before leaving, Maggie met with the doctor they had. I hadn't paid attention as to why until she and Glenn emerged from the infirmary together.
She showed us all an ultrasound picture and announced that she was pregnant. I was beyond happy for her and Glenn but it also hit me a lot differently. It brought me back to my conversation with Daryl about our future.
We both want a family but I'm not ready. I felt shitty for not being at that point, too. Either way, I tried not to think about it too much. For now, it was just back to Alexandria.
