Narrator's POV :

Tenma sat on the chair close to his vanity, merely brushing his hair again. It became a habit of his; to brush while thinking. Even Sumari noticed and commented on it once, saying it was such a girly act. Recently, he had a lot on his mind and began brushing his hair more often, ever since that fire incident. He sighed as he placed his hairbrush down and stood up, taking one last look at himself in the mirror. He walked towards his bed and sat down while turning his head to look out his window. The moon was shining bright tonight and everything felt calm, the serenity was everywhere. The brunette let the gentle coldness of his bedroom hit his skin, putting him at ease and softly lulling him.

If it weren't for the knocking on his door, he would have fallen asleep by now. Tiredly, he said "Come in." to who wished to speak to him. The boy expected it to either be Mitsuki or Sumaru but it wasn't, to his surprise. The door creaked open and his father came in, a platter of soft sweets at hand. "Good evening. Did I disturb you, Tenma ?" He asked, walking towards him and placing a kiss on his forehead. "It's alright, father. Good evening to you too." He smiled sweetly. The man placed the platter of treats by his bedside table and sat next to him. They stayed like that for a few minutes, neither of them saying a word and just enjoying the quiet. But pretty soon the ice was broken and the man opened his mouth to speak. "I have always wondered how you did those past years in Tokyo...When it comes to my mind, I feel guilty for ever doing that to you." He said, staring at the ceiling. 'He looked so sad', Tenma noted in his head. "Don't feel guilty father. I was happy there. I had friends and I played soccer with them. My relative was nice to me too." He replied. It made the man relax and sigh in relief before saying "I'm glad." Tenma giggled before his smile withered, replaced by a small frown that the other was quick to notice. He had to tell him. If not now, then when ?

"Are you okay ?" Asked his father, worried. "I...Have a confession to make." The boy whispered meekly. The man raised an eyebrow, wondering what had his son had done that made him like this all of a sudden. "What is it ? I won't be mad..." He reassured him. The brunette took a deep breath and looked down on his lap. He contemplated on whether or not tell he was responsible for the arson that happened weeks ago. What if he changes his mind about him ? What if it enrages him ? All these questions formed on Tenma's head as he started to get worried himself. All of a sudden he was in a warm embrace by him, calming him down. "Whatever you do, I will not be mad. I still and will still love you, my son." The man said as he hugged the brunette. It warmed his heart that the person who once hated him so much had completely loved him now.

"Father, I...I..." He started. He took another deep breath before finally telling his father the whole truth. "I was the one behind the Kira Arson incident." The brunette took a look at his dad's face and saw pure surprise. His heart started racing faster as the seconds pass by. The midfielder slowly separated himself out of the hug, not wanting to have this conversation any longer. He was scared now. So scared of what the man might think. He'll hurt him again, maybe disown him and throw him out, or worse; turn him in to the police. Not one of these seemed to be the best option for Tenma. All these possibilities that could lead to his doom one way or another. All these possibilities that make death look less scary. All these possibilities and the man did something unexpected. Very unexpected. He hugged him again.

"Wha— ?" The boy was shocked. This wasn't the reaction he expected to receive at all. "Father, I..." He started, not knowing what to say at the moment. "I know that you have goals to achieve and I know that you will not stop until you've gotten what you want, whether everything takes a dangerous turn...But I want you to be careful...I don't want you to get hurt. I will not forgive myself if that happens." The man said as he tightened his grip. Tenma only listened; nothing but listen as he couldn't function properly from surprise and confusion. "Always know that I'm here for you to protect you. Run to me, hide behind me and I will defend you against those who dare defy you. Alright ?" When he finished, the 14-year-old sighed and hugged back, happy that it didn't turn ugly like he envisioned in his head.

"Yes, father."

The duo hugged each other and they did not want to let go. Tenma found himself smiling widely. Now he knew there was someone behind him, ready to protect him at all costs. A person who's got his back defended. He realized how much his father had truly changed over the years. From an abusive tormentor to a loving father, he changed completely. When they separated, Tenma looked at the man as opened his mouth. "Father ? Why do you do this now ? Didn't you hate me before ?" He asked. The man widened his eyes. He knew this question was coming but he never prepared himself for it. Now he had to answer it with the only way he knew how. Just start from the beginning.

". . .I was stressed when Athena, your mother, died...I-It was too hard for me to take so I took the blame out on you...One of those days I realized that I shouldn't have done that. It was ridiculous and heartless of me. I sent you away as I didn't want to become a monster any further. But...When you returned, you resembled so much of her. I thought to myself that you were the angel she sent; and I vowed to protect you that very moment." When he finished, he caressed Tenma's cheek as the boy stared up at him in understanding. Then, he smiled and embraced him. "I'm glad we changed for the better, father." He said. They were happy like that. Just honest and caring for each other. The father-son relationship they both wished and needed. They have it now and there was no changing that.

"It's time to go to sleep Tenma. You still have lessons tomorrow." The man smiled. Tenma agreed and fixed himself on the bed and laid down. He closed his eyes and slowly drifted to sleep, his tiredness helping him rest faster. The man pulled the covers over his son and kissed him goodnight again before turning off the lampshade and standing up. "Sweet dreams, my dear." With that, he walked away and closed the bedroom door behind him. He smiled and closed his eyes, joyous over what happened. With how things are, he is going to make sure his son will be the happiest he's ever been. After all, the boy was yearning for it and he came here for it.

"I love you, my son..."
