I slap against George's back, begging him to let me down. He walks me into the castle, not giving into my pleas. As soon as we enter the giant foyer of the castle, he wavers, unsure of where to go. He finally takes a step towards the dungeons, continuing to hold me in place. I give up trying to escape him, dread filling me entirely.
Surely the boys would not resort to violence again; they couldn't. They knew I would never forgive either of them. George places a hand on the back of my thigh to keep me from falling, sending shivers through me.
George or Adrian, George or Adrian, George or Adrian?
My gut tells me to go with Adrian. He was what every girl in Hogwarts wanted. He was not perfect, but was anyone? He was fierce, he was strong, he was handsome. But I had never really known him until this year.
My heart tells me to go with George. I had known George for almost my entire life; he has always been there for me. Even in my confusion, my infidelity; he had taken my side. He was kind, he was beautiful, he was irrevocably mine.
George at last reaches the door of the Slytherin dormitory. He sets me down, holding onto my shoulder. He pounds on the stone, the loud banging ringing through the dungeons. At last, the door opens. A small boy stands in front of us, nervously eyeing George. From the height of him, he was no more than a second year. He shakes where he stands, intimidated by George's stature.
"Do you know Adrian Pucey?" George asks, his voice stern.
"N-no?" The young boy gasps, his eyes widening. George attempts to push past him, but the boy stands his ground. "You can't come in here!" He cries, nervousness pushing through his voice.
"Find Adrian and tell him Mira has something to say to him. Now!" He snaps. The kid quickly shuts the door in our faces. George turns to look at me, his expression full of fear. "I haven't exactly thought this whole thing through, dear. I don't want to fight him, alright? I won't."
I nod, unable to speak. Quickly, the door reopens in front of us. In front of us stands not Adrian, but the same young Slytherin as before. "He's coming." The boy says before promptly shutting the door on us again. I take a deep breath, readying myself for what would ensue. My heartbeat feels incredibly slow, my breathing following suit. George stands next me, calm and stony faced.
The door swings open, Adrian bursting through the door excitedly. His face falls when he makes eye contact with George at my side.
"Oh," He says full of shock, "What do you want?"
George takes a deep breath, attempting to control himself. "I would like to speak with you." He mutters through gritted teeth.
"You would? I have nothing to say to you, Weasley." He turns away.
"Adrian, please." I gasp, making his head whip back towards me.
"Come to tell me you've chosen him?" He spits, my aching heart growing heavier with each word.
"We just want to talk." I whisper, unable to look at him. I had no idea what to say. This entire ordeal was George's idea, and I had no idea what he was planning.
Adrian freezes, waiting for one of us to start speaking. "Let's go somewhere a bit more private, shall we?" George turns and begins to walk quickly away from us. I jog lightly to catch up, not daring to look back at Adrian. I can hear his footsteps following quietly behind me, and a wave of relief courses through me. We follow George for only a short moment, until he pulls a tapestry from the wall, revealing a small hidden hall.
I giggle nervously as I enter. The hall is cold and dim; an iciness fills me. George stops only a few paces in front of me, and Adrian soon enters standing right beside me. Adrian and I both look inquisitively at George, waiting for him to speak.
"Listen, Pucey, I need to get a few things straight." George says, a false bravado in his voice; he is only given away by the small glint of nervousness in his eyes.
"Go on," Adrian presses, anxious to get to the point.
"You've been unfair to Mir-"
"I've been unfair?" Adrian interrupts incredulously.
"Let me finish." George says with a creep of annoyance. "I reckon we both have been unfair to Mira. Problem is, you don't even know her!"
"The fact you've known her for six years means you're allowed to be unfair to her?" Adrian snaps back, his annoyance clear in his deep voice.
"That isn't what I said-"
"Then what did you say, huh?"
The boys glare at each other. Speechlessly, I observe them both. I can tell they are both bottling their anger, trying to not explode. My eyes bounce back and forth between them both.
"I'm saying you don't deserve her. You've known her all of a month, and you've hurt her the entire time. You think it didn't hurt me when she was sad about you? Her mood completely changed when you wouldn't speak to her, we both saw it... but I was there for her when you weren't. I've cared for her since we were eleven; loved her since I was fourteen. There have been no problems with us until you came along."
George's words sting me. Every fight we'd had, every problem we had run into... had they been because of Adrian? But George had got it wrong; there were times when Adrian had made me happy... or were there? Was I mistaking my physical attraction for a real one?
Adrian is fuming, standing with his hands in fists at his sides. "Then why can't she forget me? Why does she pull away from you and come straight to me?"
I open my mouth to defend myself, but George reacts quicker than me. "You bloody idiot. I knew you were a sod, but really? You can't see it?" He chuckles dangerously, "You're the reason she's ever upset in the first place! Any time she's had a fight with me, it's because you created a problem. But not anymore." George looks at me desperately, yearning to find a glimpse of agreeance within me.
"What are you gonna do, Weasley? Fight me again? Hit Mira again whilst you're at it?" Adrian calls out menacingly. It is this tone which breaks me out of my stupor.
"Stop! The both of you." I call out quickly. Both boys turn their heads to me quickly, "If either of you decide to start a fight I swear to Merlin I'll hex you both."
Adrian takes a step towards me, his large hand extended. I take a step back instinctively, stepping closer to George.
"Mira, please. You know how you feel." Adrian calls out to me.
"I-I need to think about this. Both of you, just let me think. And leave each other alone or you'll both regret it." I say as my head begins to spin. I run out of the hall and into the main corridor, leaving both boys behind me.
I continue to run through the castle, unsure of my destination. I just need to be by myself, for once.
