The next few days are buzzing with excitement. The whole school was looking forward to the ball, it was all anyone could talk about. The dance was tomorrow night, and I sit with Julia in the library.
Adrian and Marcus were out with the boys, they had decided on a friendly match of quidditch amongst themselves. The twins and Lee had four detentions they needed to serve if they wanted to go to the ball, so naturally they had been spending every day after class stuck in McGonagall's office.
Julia sits on my right, explaining how to deconstruct an already made potion. She had taken this class last year, she was ahead of us all. "Julia?" I ask her. She looks up from the book, worriedly.
"Are you not getting it? I can start over." She tells me. Her big eyes hold the smallest bit of anxiety behind them.
I shake my head. "You're so intelligent. And so pretty. Why do you keep going after Marcus? He's so... him." I ask her.
Her cheeks turn pink and she looks down. "I dunno. Has Adrian told you that Marcus is taking Victoria to the dance? I thought he would ask me, but he didn't."
"And she said yes? I'm so sorry, Jules. Who are you going with instead?" I ask, placing my hand on hers.
"No one. I had been asked by someone else but I said no, I was waiting for Marcus to ask me. It's my fault, I suppose." Her eyes begin to water, and she wipes at them lightly.
"Why don't you go with Adrian? You two are good friends." I offer.
She looks up at me. "Aren't you going with him? Have you broken up again?"
"No, we're together. It's complicated. But you should go with Adrian, I'm sure you two will have a great time. I'll tell him today." I tell her.
She deserved so much better than Marcus. I don't know what she saw in him; nobody did. Marcus was lucky to have any attention from a girl at all, but he continuously shot her down. "It's late, we should probably get going." She smiles at me.
I nod, and begin to pack up my things. We make our way out of the library together, and on the ground floor we bump into a group of boys. We blush and excuse ourselves, but one boy grabs my hand.
"Hey there, I've been looking for you!" The boys says. I look at him, and recognize him instantly.
"Joshua! Hey, about the dance-"
"Jacob." He corrects me.
"Right, sorry. Erm, my dress is purple. Dark purple, so you can match." I tell him.
He smiles; his eyes squint and dimples form on his cheeks. "Perfect. I'll meet you at Gryffindor tower at seven then?"
"Sounds like a plan." He nods to Julia and turns back to his friends.
Julia is beet red. She grabs my hand and pulls me down the hall, towards the dungeon. "That's your date? He's incredible!"
I giggle lightly. "Yeah, he's kind of cute."
"Kind of? Well, I guess you have a boyfriend. You have to say that." She laughs. She throws her arm over my shoulder, and we giggle together as we make our way to the Slytherin common room. As she reaches her hand up to grab the doorknob, I jump. "What's wrong?" She asks.
"Julia, I have the most brilliant plan! You're going to go to the dance with Adrian, and once we're all there Joshua-"
"Jacob."
"-and I will hang out with you. I'll find a way to excuse myself and then you can just talk to him!" I say excitedly. "Come on, it's perfect!"
"That's pretty good. I don't know. What if Marcus-" She starts.
